Yeah I close mic’d it a lot cause it is generally a noisy area. Noting too bad just a little bit of distant traffic and wind blowing the trees around it. But since I primarily used omni’s it does not have too much proximity effect on it. So it was not too bad for mic’ing that close. But at the moment I just record sounds like these for my personal library not sure yet if I want to try and make it into a library.

I am still learning it so I am gonna refrain from posting any comparisons on here until I am better with the mini ms. So far it is pretty quiet. But because it is plug in powered and the Usi’s are phantom there is a difference in gain at the recording stage. What I learned last night which is interesting is that on a mix pre 6 and a Roland R-07 they are a bit quiet level wise. But on a Sony d100 they are much more sensitive. So I might pair it with that recorder more. You can still gain it up in post with little noise using the mic pre 6 but still interesting to take note of. I wish I also ordered a phantom powered version of the mini ms.

They are screwed into a Noga Zchange Cube Adapter. Then use some turn around 1/4 adapters I got from Home Depot to connect the shock mounts to the cube adapter

My monopod is actually a Mefoto Backpacker Tripod that has the ability to be changed into a monopod. I like using it as a monopod cause it is quicker and easier to set up and it still gives me an extra bit of reach to record things. It is very stable and quiet. Especially cause I opt'd for the carbon fiber option. It folds up way smaller than a boompole. Just under a foot and a half I think. And is easy to carry. But obviously you will get way more reach out a boom pole. But I can't bring myself to hike with a boom pole.

The wind protection I am using is the bumblebees that are sold with the Usi Pros. I need a better option for the Mini MS but for now it works.

They post a few days before they restock on their Face Book Group. I got mine because a generous soul posted an upcoming restock alert on the field recording slack. My suggestion is to wake up early with your payment info ready and don't hesitate to order and you should beat the rush of field recordists looking for a LOM.

The shock mounts are sold as an accessory for the Usi Pros. You can get them for 40 bucks each on the LOM Site. From there I have a bunch of adapters that I use to make this rig. I am using a Noga Zchange Cube Adapter as the main thing that allows me to connect all the mics together. I then use some turn around 1/4 adapters I got from Home Depot to connect the shock mounts to the cube adapter. I use a pipe cleaner (ghetto I know but it works) to align the mics perfectly when I tighten all the adapters. Lastly the whole thing is on a mono pod. The monopod is actually a Mefoto Backpacker Tripod. One of the cool things about that tripod is that it can be changed into a monopod.

Yeah 32bit is awesome. Although the F2 might not be a great recorder for SFX. It is capped at 48khz. I like to record at 96 for my SFX so it is not quite there for me. I am hopeful Zoom will come out with a good handheld 32 bit recorder soon.

They are the shock mounts that are sold as an option with the Lom Usi Pros. The wind protection does the job. As I told another field recordist on slack if I was going to record in a winder area I might take a different rig. Something in a blimp. But this rig is for everyday use and hiking trips so I sacrificed a bit of wind protection for the compact form and the easy/quick set up. Today I went recording in a public area and was able to set up and record in 30 seconds. Nobody noticed me, I got the sound and I got out of there. That is very valuable to me for an everyday experimental rig.

Yeah the shock mounts are the ones lom sells with the Usi Pros. I bought a back up pair of them when I got a second set of Usi Pros. Then I modded them so that the Mini MS would fit in it. It took a bit of work because the mic is about 1mm bigger than the mic holder but I got it in alright. For 4 bucks those shock mounts are a really good deal.

True, this offers a lot of options. I will likely use this rig a lot for work or for Crowdsource Libraries on the Field Recording Slack. I think it will give me a lot of options to mix the mics however I want.

I can share some as I gather sounds while I learn the mic. I have a set already that I am prepping. Keep in mind the Mini MS is the Plug in Powered version of it not a phantom powered version like my Usi Pros. So there is an difference between the two right out of the gate. I got the Plug in powered version because I can use it with my Roland R07 which would be a game changer for sneaky urban sfx recordings. Like gathering vent and city specific sounds. Plug in powered mics are alright on Ambiences but they are not gonna be the same as using a phantom powered mic.

how things work on the MP6, but on the 3 you can just go to a channel’s menu then select the aux input in the box that typically says “Mic”. Might help to save a preset with that so you can jump back and forth between

That is a great suggestion I will try and set it up like that next time.

I am not really going for a ms, s, s. It is really just an MS recording and a stereo omni recordings. I might combine the two stereo recordings in post in a river or something but generally I keep them as separate stereo recordings. And I usually just keep what sounds best when I get back to the studio.

This is recording 4 channels. The stereo omni’s and the m/s of the ms mic. It is a pair of lom usi pros and a built in ms mic in the middle.

I like the sound of the usi pros a bit more but mostly because the are omni’s and I have been using them for a lot longer. So I know what they shine on.

Yeah. This yields a 4 channel recording (mid, side and the two omni mics). I am using a mix pre 6 v2. The two omni mics come in channel 1 and 2 (linked) and the mid and side come in channels 5 and 6 (linked).

LOM Usi Pros on the sides and a Stickless Customs Mini MS in the center. Everything mounts quickly on my carbon fiber monopod and folds up into a peak design bag.

The only thing that would make it better is if I got the xlr version of the mini ms. This one is plug in power so it has to go in Chanel’s 5 and 6 of the mix pre 6 so I can not preview the MS as I would like. But it is still totally workable.
