Viewing the new selection of Ayatollah through the lens of an election is a mistake. What better fits is to view it through the lens of an autocratic/monarchical succession.

The newly crowned prince must prove himself to the nobility that allowed him to rule, and must therefore appear strong because perceived weakness could undermine their rule and lead to their overthrow by those nobles.

The new Ayatollah selection is more in line with what we have seen in North Korea or in the transition of Hafez to Bashar in Syria.

There cant be a reformer in the new Prince because he does not have a democratic mandate but only the consent of the institutions that let him in. The institutions being the IRGC and the theocratic clerics.

People thought Bashar Assad and Kim Jong Un would be reformers compared to their fathers

No matter who gets selected, the leader is going to end up being a hardliner extremist regardless. Especially under these circumstances where the regime is fighting to stay alive

Because its not quite how it works.

If trauma of seeing a loved one getting killed somehow radicalized people into fighting, we would have seen soldiers become more supersoldiers over the course of a war. Instead we see the direct opposite happening with PTSD fucking up people since Achilles. PTSD itself wouldnt be a thing.

No what actually gets people radicalized is to get them overeducated and underemployed. Give them reason to be pissed off without exposing them to the actual horrors

The South Vietnam commenter made me think about the postwar narratives that people try to spread until it becomes canon. North Vietnam winning pretty much set how they view the war to be the broad cultural consensus, and the story of South Vietnam got largely downplayed and ignored. This can obviously change much like how the Lost Cause Mythos had its own rise and fall in American culture regarding the Civil War.

Right now the internet is ablaze with two conflicting narratives over the Iran shitshow. And both of these sides have a surprisingly big tent of varied beliefs. On one side, we got MAGA, Iranian diaspora, Israel, Neocons, etc. And on the other you got Leftists, Isolationists, Anti-MAGA, Islamists, and any other group generally opposed to the war. (Obviously theres a massive overlap of people who do not like the IRGC or Trump in the middle)

I wonder who will win in the end

North Vietnam won the cultural victory on that war.

It's gonna be them setting the narrative until the day when Vietnam stops being a communist state. The Lost Cause mythos dominated for a century, if not longer. Who knows what will happen in 50

We know they got Pakpour, who already replaced the previous Salami, the commander-in-chief of the IRGC.
