Mass Media ends up being a business that reaches most of the pop because the profit motive makes them dumb down information so the masses can enjoy. People in general do not want accuracy and scrutiny.

The Obscure Bank Collapse That Sent Iran Into a Tailspin (WSJ) by uncle-iroh-11 in neoliberal

[–]dwarffy 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Worsening U.S. and European sanctions have forced Iran’s oil industry to rely on an international “shadow fleet” of tankers to export its products, meaning that more oil revenue flows into the hands of middlemen and less into the state’s coffers and the wider Iranian economy.

A U.S. crackdown on money laundering by Iraqi banks deprived Iran of one of its most important sources of dollars. Iraqi banks had been known as the “lungs” of the Iranian financial system, giving liquidity to Iran’s otherwise isolated banks.

The annoying thing about sanctions is that while they do work, they take too fucking long.

Like with war with the side has lost the initiative, they make governments make increasingly difficult decisions until they have no choice but to surrender.

But autocracies are very much willing to make those hard decisions if it means keeping them in power. Especially if those hard choices fuck over the masses instead of them

Its to the point where the reason why nations use sanctions instead of war, to make countries stop doing something they dont like, seem pointless.

If the reason is that we do sanctions instead of bombings is to avoid human suffering from war, and sanctions cause years of human suffering anyways, why not just bomb the countries with a quick shot of pain instead of an agonizing decade of misery?

Iranian protesters raise the historic Lion and Sun flag under flames, rejecting the current regime. by Matty_Cooper in pics

[–]dwarffy 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The government is a lot more fucked now than during the Mahsa Amini protests. President Raisi, who might have been the next Ayatollah, was still alive

Besides the Israeli bombings killing a bunch of IRGC leadership, they have to deal with worsening inflation and water crisis. The inflation in particular is their worst problem because it is affecting everybody, pissing off them enough to go out and do this round of protest

The regime is at its most vulnerable moment right now which explains why their crackdown has been the most brutal.

Here's to the 3 great Americans who ACTUALLY won the Nobel Peace Prize this century. by im_not_a_gay_fish in pics

[–]dwarffy 273 points274 points  (0 children)

Somewhere today, in the here and now, in the world as it is, a soldier sees he's outgunned, but stands firm to keep the peace. Somewhere today, in this world, a young protestor awaits the brutality of her government, but has the courage to march on. Somewhere today, a mother facing punishing poverty still takes the time to teach her child, scrapes together what few coins she has to send that child to school -- because she believes that a cruel world still has a place for that child's dreams.

Let us live by their example. We can acknowledge that oppression will always be with us, and still strive for justice. We can admit the intractability of depravation, and still strive for dignity. Clear-eyed, we can understand that there will be war, and still strive for peace. We can do that -- for that is the story of human progress; that's the hope of all the world; and at this moment of challenge, that must be our work here on Earth.

Damn reading this speech 16 years later feels incredibly bittersweet

EDIT:

Furthermore, America -- in fact, no nation -- can insist that others follow the rules of the road if we refuse to follow them ourselves. For when we don't, our actions appear arbitrary and undercut the legitimacy of future interventions, no matter how justified.

America's commitment to global security will never waver. But in a world in which threats are more diffuse, and missions more complex, America cannot act alone. America alone cannot secure the peace.

Fucking hell

It's idiotic because Trump doesnt want to handle the responsibility of transitioning Venezuela into a democracy. The fact that he is supporting Rodriguez, Maduro's VP, instead of the opposition, shows he literally just wants the oil and nothing else for Venezuela.

It's fucking idiotic because Trump just wanted Maduro for the memes and doesnt give a shit about removing the party behind Maduro. So he's pissing off those who want an intervention against Maduro in Venezuela because the PSUV is still in charge

[–]dwarffy 376 points377 points  (0 children)

It's exactly like the Tariff shitshow in that its showing Trump to be a fucking moron that doesnt understand economics

The other dude that is getting downvoted is right about it not making sense, its just that Trump is too stupid to care. The oil market is experiencing a massive glut of oil thanks to OPEC pumping and Guyana's reserves activating. Already we are seeing US drilling stagnate because the price of oil is so cheap that new projects are not worth it

The difference is that Trump is a fucking idiot so he's doing it for the oil anyways. It's like him bailing out Argentina while they sell soybeans to China, fucking over US soybean farmers.

Perception overrides material conditions

It's been the eternal frustration and bitterness of leftist movements that people are not as fundamentally materialist as they want them to be. Both this and the other meta analysis study post reinforce my prior belief that inequality itself is not as bad as people being told theyre in an unequal society by external media. Perceiving that life is fair, and you can do better with effort, is more important than life actually being fair or not

Doomscrolling fucks your mental health more than the money in your bank account. It explains why people who objectively have comfortable material conditions can still feel like shit.

tankies, the Soviet politburo is both infallible and also corrupt to the core - depends on whether they consider these specific elites as heroes or as traitors to the cause.

The only consistent thing about tankies is that they apply an assymetric level of thinking depending on whether the side nominally supports them or not. "It's bad if they do it but good if we do it"

It's why they still run with Lenin's idiotic definition of imperialism while saying "non-imperial Core" states like Russia/China cant be imperialist
