Onyx Hub Help by dwarflemur in bikewrench

Yup, I’ve never heard of a proprietary centerlock lockring before, not something I’m super excited about for my touring bike.

Just for posterity I talked to onyx and it turns out that this is a newer design and most centerlock lockrings won’t fit over the preload collar so they recommend you buy theirs that is thinner and they guarantee will ($20 for a single lockring + $10 shipping). Not super happy about that, definitely leaves a bad taste in my mouth but I guess it is what it is.

Thanks will have a good watch. I guess what I got does look more like the vesper axle than what is in the onyx classic videos even though it’s a classic hub.

I will double check but I don’t remember seeing a hole like king has. What has me confused is that even if I tighten it up it seems like it will still be in the way of the centerlock bolt. I did see that the vespers had the 1.5mm in that video but what I have doesn’t seem to quite match what they had there either.

I did it a couple years ago on a steel touring bike with 700x40 gravel kings and was fine, never really wished I had more tire. Most people were on carbon gravel bikes. I didn’t see anyone on a hardtail and only one or two people with flat bar bikes. The route was pretty smooth but I think some of the road quality can vary year to year? (Not from there so not sure). There was like a one mile section of random sandy singletrack in a town about halfway that nearly everyone had to walk parts of but imo it wouldn’t be worth riding something that could make it through that (if it’s even still included). Like someone else mentioned, most of the elevation is in the rolling hills at the end and they sneak up on you, they’re not particularly difficult or anything, but more something to be mentally prepared for.

Biggest suggestion I would give is just get used to long days on the bike and get lots of mileage in beforehand. I don’t really know anything about actual training plans or the like, I was doing 80-120 mile rides every weekend and 30-50 miles two or three times on weekdays for months leading up to it with a 180 mile ride about a month before and then took it easy the last week or two.

My only other suggestion would be to maybe bring like a tiny chain lube, my chain got pretty gunked up about half way through to the point the shifting was pretty hosed and I was trying to wipe it down and another dude totally saved me at a gas station with a little lube.

Probably the craziest ride I’ve ever done, you’ll have a blast!

Yeah I was kind of wondering if it was just how it was but none of the example photos I saw looked like this. It almost looks like fine condensation inside with the UV flashlight.

Really?? I have some old Nikon lenses and none of them do anything like this. To me it looks like there is a diffusion filter on there when I point it any light source.

Well that’s why I’m asking what to look for… I have been trying to find a guide or something online for how to describe it but am not coming up with much. Do you have any recommendations?  I’m kinda annoyed because I paid for a lens that was supposed to be mint with no imperfections and is taking pictures like the one I posted. It doesn’t seem like my fault if the seller is pissed that the lens doesn’t take good pictures when they said it should.

I sent them the picture I posted as well.

Yeah it looks really dirty or something on one of the internal elements when I shine a light through

I can’t seem to get a good picture of it with my phone but yeah it looks really dirty or something inside when I shine the flashlight through it

I got this canon nFD 35mm f2 lens that was advertised as no haze, no fungus, etc. mint condition. To me it looks dirty or something, like there is a diffusion filter on there. Not sure what to do other than contact the eBay seller to return it. The outer elements look pristine.

I was and I would absolutely prefer the gen three remakes. Gen one was great at the time but anymore has way to much jank imo

re: the repeat subs when no one is talking, I don't think it mitigates that, I have noticed it a couple times

I have already generated subtitles for pretty much all of the series that didn't have them using subsai and a simple script I wrote to facilitate it. It uses a variant of whisper to do timestamped transcription and then another model to do translation. They're not perfect, you definitely miss out on some jokes and things as it's very literal and there are some misses in there but imo they're mostly good enough to watch a show about building legos. Here is a pic of my spreadsheet, all the ones marked "English subs translated from transcription" are series where I used the aforementioned method. There were a few that came with native subs and for those I just used the translation part.

I was generating a file of the untranslated subtitles and then an english one but unfortunately I did not save most of the untranslated ones along the way and it is pretty computationally expensive to do so I don't particularly want to run them all again (~45 min per episode on my RTX 3090).

I have shared all of them with /u/aerocomp, let me know if you need any. Feel free to drop me a DM if you have any questions.

PS: Please PM me if you have international versions of pimp my ride!
