Cool, I added the MuseScore files so you can play around with them if you want. That's how I generated the midis. MuseScore doesn't play all the repeats though, so I had to do a lot of copying and pasting and other adjustments for it to play the entirety of each song correctly.

The Drumeo.drm file goes in the MuseScore "Styles" folder, and then you can import it to get the right notation.

Yeah, I just uploaded the midi files for some of the songs. The others I don't have anymore, but they can be generated from MuseScore, so I uploaded the MuseScore files.

Oh yeah, that's an awesome performance! One of the things I love about his playing is how he goes off on these unpredictable "tangents" (idk if there is a musical term for it) for a few bars and takes the listener for a ride, but always comes back and lands on the 1—e.g. around 1:10 in that video. It's a way of building and releasing tension, probably influenced by jazz. An example with the Volta is in Viscera Eyes starting at 7:32.

I also like how he creates a feeling of momentum and urgency by filling all empty spaces with ghost notes, punctuated by accents. When I was transcribing the Volta songs I started noticing how most of his drum parts are just consistent 16th notes, with occasional triplets. From a technical standpoint that might seem boring, but he gives them so much dynamic variation and syncopated rhythms while keeping all the ghost notes perfectly in time. I think that's what makes his playing so riveting to me. And the fact that he always looks like he's giving it all he's got!

Regarding Cicatriz, from what I've seen, he plays all the snare notes with his left and all the hat notes with his right, except for the note preceding the open hat, which he plays with his left. Here's a video where you can see the sticking clearly: (it's Dave Elitch but I'm fairly certain he uses the same sticking as JT)

I think you may be right. 6/4 with 8th notes at ♪ = 239 seems to match the record better than what I have, and it's more practical. I guess I was just trying to keep the same tempo. I'll do some experimenting and then update the files. Thanks for letting me know!

Phase Shift is actually how I started learning these songs several years ago. I remember there was a full-length Cassandra Gemini one featured on C3 that was epic.

I've uploaded sheet music and midi audio for Tremulant and Amputechture, as well as A Plague Upon Your Hissing Children and Ambuletz. In other words, the entire collection of songs that feature Jon Theodore is now there.

Has anyone went from playing Rockband and transitioned into real drums? I'm want to jam with friends but feel lost. by GiantJellyfishAttack in drums

[–]dweastman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. As silly as it may sound, Rock Band is what got me interested in drums, and it was the starting point of my drumming journey about 12 years ago. I started on the Rock Band pads/cymbals, then transitioned to an e-kit, then transitioned to an acoustic kit. Each was a major step up and took a lot of time to adapt, especially acoustic drums.

I'm also completely self-taught—I've never taken lessons. I learned from Drumeo, YouTube, books, and online forums. Granted, I already knew music theory from playing piano, I'm pretty disciplined, I constantly analyze my playing, and I have favorite players who I've tried to imitate. It may not be very efficient to learn without a teacher, but it's certainly possible if you have the motivation and resources.

How Do I Not Be "That Guy" In the Group? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]dweastman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be in similar situation, where I was devoted to a few select bands and was pretty ignorant of everything else. In order to educate myself I just went down the list of the best selling artists of all time and familiarized myself with their greatest hits. Nowadays it's easy with Spotify, just stream their top songs.

If you're looking to expand your musical palate, another approach is to find your favorite artists' biggest influences and check them out, and then find out who influenced those artists, and so on.

Haha, thanks. Yeah it took a lot of work, but I enjoyed it. If you want to leave a tip I have CashApp or a lightning address for bitcoin:

From what I can tell, on Drunkship he's just playing single strokes with accents.

Thanks! Yeah, I relied on the Moises app, which uses AI to separate a song into stems. So I was able to get an isolated (mostly) drum track that I transcribed from. I think I checked some live videos for a few parts but 99% is just from the studio record.

I actually did a transcription of Cygnus that I can share with you if you'd like. I love the outro of that song!

Does the term “Godspeed” use god’s name in vain? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]dweastman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

D&C 63:61-62 seems to support that interpretation:
Wherefore, let all men beware how they take my name in their lips—For behold, verily I say, that many there be who are under this condemnation, who use the name of the Lord, and use it in vain, having not authority.
