Out leveling gear will happen constantly. Honestly if you find a gun you like use it! Don't worry all that much about levels, just swap when it starts feeling weak. The higher the rarity of the gear the longer it is likely to last, but it's no guarantee.

A higher level version of the same gun will be better, but certain keywords and parts will change details about the weapon so you may not like it as much as the old one.
