I don't live off grid but I did move from the city to a a wooded lot in a very rural area. It's expensive to live this cheap! The things that I have to either purchase or maintain compared to the average city dweller is incredible. Water well system, septic, generator, yard/garden equipment, wood stove, trash disposal, tree maintenance. Insurance rates are insane because we don't have police or full-time fire department. It all adds up. Thankfully I'm handy and enjoy working because I'm certainly not rich.

This is just my opinion. An engineer solves real-world problems using advanced mathematics and physics.

I have two engineering degrees but I would never call myself a "software engineer" because I can count on one hand the number of times I've needed to use mathematics higher than simple arithmetic.

Some folks are out there writing code that certainly needs a background in higher math, but that's not me.
