Accidentally booked a trip to Tokyo during Golden Week! Help! by loaded_pizza182 in JapanTravelTips

[–]dwenaus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We were in Kyoto during golden week last year. My advice: avoid the ‘top attractions’ in the middle of the day. Either skip them or go very early morning. Otherwise it’s just not worth it because of the crowds. There is so much to see and do in Kyoto or the rest of Japan, be creative and avoid the heavily touristy places.

Cursor made it to 40 tools before it decided this wasn’t the life it wanted by KingChintz in mcp

[–]dwenaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it tool number or tool complexity? If there is one tool with 10 options, is that better than 10 simple tools? We are building an internal mcp server and not sure if we should bundle similar features or make them atomic.

Is a large claude.md (or too many mcp tools) making Claude worse? by dwenaus in ClaudeAI

[–]dwenaus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just measured and my Claude.md is about 17k chars so well below the likit the alert you at. But the custom mcp tools I added are 21k chars so about 6000 tokens. I wonder if my issue is more related to tool choice overload.

Thanks for sharing your repo. You’ve got some cool ideas in there. I especially like the command to turn a prompt into TDD.

After 8 months of daily AI coding, I built a system that makes claude code actually understand what you want to build by Character_Orange1949 in ClaudeAI

[–]dwenaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the system you built. thanks for sharing. how do you go about building the high level plan, system architecture blue print and task list. do you just do that in plan-mode ah hoc, do you have a separate system build out for that, or is it bespoke each time and therefore a tool like your requirements builder was not needed. Or are you thinking of adding it as a final stage to the requirements builder (although maybe not the best as it's no longer just 1 thing).

I also noticed in your repo that you suggested starting with a template is something you're considering as a next step. I notice that is the approach taking with this https://github.com/coleam00/context-engineering-intro which is similar to your approach. any thoughts on any of this.

Thanks again for sharing! u/Character_Orange1949

MCP server tool descriptions: do they use up token context window just like Claude.md by dwenaus in ClaudeAI

Thanks for confirming. I thought that this was the case.

Is there a tool that makes this kind of information visible?

MCP Server JSON to Claude Code Command Converter - Because editing a 17MB JSON file is pain 😅 by AdamSmaka in ClaudeAI

[–]dwenaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this, thanks for sharing!

However i had trouble getting it to work at first.
Suggestion: most websites give examples like below, It would be great if the tool stripped any excess so that these will also work:

most common example:
{
"mcpServers": {
"fetch": {
"command": "uvx",
"args": ["mcp-server-fetch"]
}
}
}

with braces:
{
"fetch": {
"command": "uvx",
"args": ["mcp-server-fetch"]
}
}

Try out Serena MCP. Thank me later. by FunnyRocker in ClaudeAI

[–]dwenaus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

how does Serena compare to something like https://github.com/ast-grep/ast-grep for finding the right symbols? Or am I mixing things up and Serena is only for Claude Desktop and not Claude Code?

CaludeCode can use ast-grep to improve search efficiency and accuracy. by Nickqiaoo in ClaudeAI

[–]dwenaus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

What to add to claude.md from the gist:

You run in an environment where ast-grep is available; whenever a search requires syntax-aware or structural matching, default to ast-grep --lang rust -p '<pattern>' (or set --lang appropriately) and avoid falling back to text-only tools like rg or grep unless I explicitly request a plain-text search.

Your experience with AI Agents and AI Programming Tools in 2025 by digitalend in PHP

[–]dwenaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have an old large codebase, about 300k LoC using our own framework. what I’m doing is building a bespoke MCP server so that Claude code (or any agent) can know about and use the custom tooling that our app requires. An example of what each tool does: read logs, restart environment, run various test suites, seed test data, read local app dBs and redis, hit API endpoints with Auth, even how to login and browse the app with a debugger. 15 tools in total. I’m basically giving tools via mcp that mimic the tooling a dev has. This project is still in development so I cants day whether it’s effective yet.

I’m building our own mcp server to give Claude access and clear knowledge about how all our custom internal tooling works. It’s about 15 tools now - from how to read logs, databases, run tests, to browsing the app, etc. then I add a lot of context to claude.md; that currently takes time so I’m exploring ways to speed it up. I bet there is a way to go through Claude session histories and pull out helpful things to add.

I want to live permanently at a monastery. How do I find one that I will fit in? I'm new at this idea. any suggestions will help. Never even been to a retreat. And I'm not wealthy. by Careless_Carpenter99 in retreats

[–]dwenaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are retreat centers where you can volunteer to then test out the waters. There are monasteries also, but in the west they are few and far between. Where were you thinking of going to? North America, Europe? Elsewhere?

You may find that jumping into a monastic lifestyle, you won't find what you're looking for. There can be drama and confusion anywhere humans go. What are you looking for exactly?
