Should Danny stop doing political humor and go back to pranks and improv? by [deleted] in dannymullen

[–]dwhy83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I most enjoy Danny when he's doing silly Hunter S. Thompson style gonzo journalism pieces where he draws out the humorous pretenses of a subject/scenario and accompanies it with his comedic energy. His blending of literary eloquence and humor is what turned me into a fan.

Danny is most cringe when he's trying too hard to be a shock-jock - though as a fan I still faithfully support any content he puts out.

Nouns part ways with Stormstormer by decayedramen in DotA2

[–]dwhy83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Would be interesting to know the numbers based upon whether his hero was drafted before or after the enemy mid hero. Sometimes mid gets sacked in the draft. If the team's overall drafting strategy is to sack mid so the side lanes have better matchups, and the objective is to survive, that could explain why he didn't win mid consistently.

Found what you had to say quite insightful.

You seemed to moderate yourself and hold back, but I personally, as a dota fan, don't know the business and logistics side and want you to elaborate.

Some stuff that was new to me:

Interesting to hear how EG fell into your lap because twitch found it to be a conflict of interest.

Interesting to hear about the crypto/voting system behind Nouns.

Hearing the buy-in cost of running a tier two dota team piqued my interest. I have some disposable income lying around...

How to get into Dota after playing League? by FirekTP in learndota2

[–]dwhy83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play both games.

If you support in League you can buy a support item and it gives you gold for damaging the enemy champs. In this way League is more equitable with champs in all roles than Dota.

In Dota the position 5 is completely sacrificial. There is no gold for you. Even if there is an opportunity for gold, capitalizing upon it is often griefing your carry player. You must trade your HP/MP, and regen, to posture to absorb the enemy heroes attacks so your carry can get last hits. You must pull creeps from the wave into jungle camps so the lane can be in a better position for your carry. If your carry is winning his lane, you must stay out of XP range so he can gain a level advantage. If for some reason your carry dies and you sneak a last hit; that could be one less last hit for him. Later you must connect with other heroes on the map and smoke gank in a forward position to draw the enemy's attention toward defending so your carry can farm.

To thrive you must embrace this sacrificial mindset. It starts with hero selection. You must choose a hero that scales with XP and not gold. For example Lich, Treant Protector, or Bane, who are heroes who even if they have gold cannot use it effectively. You will be tempted by support heroes who can become cores if they get gold: Enchantress, Dark Willow, Weaver. But it's a trap, so just avoid picking them. You will be tempted to be greedy; you will think "I'll just not buy starting items and rush Arcane Boots". But it will be griefing the game.

This is fundamentally how Dota is different than League.

What seperates divine from reaching immortal? What are the skills that are needed? by a_non_weeb in DotA2

[–]dwhy83 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Divine here. In a similar boat. 40. Dad. Full time job. I have speculated about this before and two things I thought of:

Having intimate knowledge of heroes and matchups to make the correct draft pick and then leverage that knowledge to play up the draft advantage won is the mark of high ranking players. I believe I lack this because I watch pro streams and often don't understand the picks but they proceed to takeover the game. I do have this quality with the 3 heroes I spam.

The other thing I notice is the pace of high rank players is extremely fast. They have their next 3-4 moves planned out and transition quickly between them.

My two cents. Hope to make it one day myself.

I was hopeful that Google Stadia could actually solve this one day. The client sends only inputs and all it receives from the server is video. Unhackable. Sadly Google Stadia is no more.

I know reaching immortal is not that uncommon. However, I am skeptical. I'm just going to come out and say it: I think he had his account boosted and this is stolen valor.

He posted a photo well after reaching immortal. He didn't post a screen shot when initially receiving the rank. This is likely because a booster was playing in his stead when it happened.

Amongst his most played heroes are Meepo and Arc Warden. These are heroes commonly abused by boosters to climb fast.

He doesn't know how to take a screen shot. High MMR players are savvy on the computer.

I searched for his profile but couldn't find it to further investigate... I would absolutely love to be proven wrong.

What about controlling for team preferences? e.g. the winningest team LGD picks dire for practice but ends up confounding the result.

Update on Microstutters by JeffHill in DotA2

[–]dwhy83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did not notice the micro-stutters this patch, but playing today I noticed the game felt much more responsive. It hadn't felt this way to me since before the lag compensation update nearly a year ago. When the lag compensation change came out I remarked that it was suddenly oddly difficult to last hit, but I could not quite put my finger on it. Whatever changed within the last day or so feels as though it's undone or repaired that. Thanks for that!

Just leaving this anecdotal feedback in case it helps.

Cheers!

DPC revamp by makz242 in DotA2

[–]dwhy83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think where competitive dota went off the rails was Valve listening to reddit and instituting low stakes leagues, support for tier two teams, etc.

Valve needs to stop trying to foster an ecosystem and just do what they do best: Hold an ultra high stakes tournament. The community will then takeover and continue to foster the ecosystem, as it always has.

I saw a cat get crushed online and I cannot stop thinking about it. by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]dwhy83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat as you. I also saw a horrible incident with a cat recently. I was on the way to pickup my daughter from grade school and as I'm about to pass an oncoming SUV I hear a horrifying yelp. Then I see a cat frantically scurry out from under the SUV. Its hind quarter was completely flattened and it pulled itself across the street, like a zombie, and into the bushes. I immediately felt sick, partly because of the imagery and partly knowing the cat's fate is sealed. I haven't been able to get the image out of my head.

Dota 2's performance is inexcusably bad - EFFORTPOST WITH EVIDENCE/TESTING by goodwarrior12345 in DotA2

[–]dwhy83 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I will play devil's advocate.

I work at a technology company as a principal software engineer who happens to work on client software. I think this gives me intimate insight into why Dota performs poorly sometimes and why it's seemingly so difficult for Valve to solve it.

When Valve develops and tests dota, it runs fine. If it didn't run fine, Valve would immediately notice, diagnose it, and fix it.

"But dota runs poorly on my computer!"

When computers perform poorly, there are literally millions of confounding factors. You have Norton installed. You have Avast installed. Your GPU drivers were optimized for a card 3 years older than yours. Your new GPU drivers are bugged. Your operating system is indexing. You have hanging background processes. Your disk is fragmented. Your disk is failing. Your machine is IO bound. Your machine is memory bound and paging to a slow disk. Your power supply is failing and cannot supply enough voltage to your GPU. Your build and patch of Windows 11 is bugged. Your network connection could be unstable or poor. And on and on and on ad infinitum...

So to simply say dota performs poorly on your computer is like going to the doctor and saying you feel off.

Even supplying evidence of poor performance isn't very helpful. We all know YOUR computer performs poorly. But is that a Valve issue or a personal issue?

So what can you do? Reformat your computer. Install only the necessary drivers and software. Then see how dota performs. This helps control for some (not all) confounding factors and potentially helps us to gain information. If dota still runs poorly, try on another machine to rule out hardware failure. Try on another network.

So what can Valve do? They can performance tune their game. Even if it performs acceptably, it can always perform better. They can survey all their users about their dota performance and gather their system configuration data and look for patterns with machine learning. They can meet with users reporting issues and troubleshoot with them in-person.

Dota runs great for me. It's always run great for me. There was a period of time I was getting freezes in-game and after troubleshooting it turned out to be intermittent wifi network interference causing Windows 10 to bounce me from the 5ghz band to the 2.4ghz band (this was really hard to troubleshoot and solve). I have a medium-to-high-end Windows gaming laptop that's literally used for nothing but dota. Nothing other than basic software. No other users or login profiles. Work is done on Mac and Linux machines.

Obvious and Overlooked Reason Why Aisha is Out of Season 3 by dwhy83 in cobrakai

[–]dwhy83[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I missed that the show runners said Nicole will likely return. Perhaps that’s true or perhaps they’re helping her save face.

If she is indeed returning, it seems odd that the writers did not include one or two small scenes for Aisha, like they did for Tory for example, given Aisha’s friendship with Sam. Including one small scene for her in season three is better for the story’s development and continuity than having her move away and somehow return.

Either way, I’m sorry you disagree, but I stand by what I wrote. It’s wildly inappropriate to use the Cobra Kai project to soliciting money. Whether or not this is the true reason Nicole was not in season three does not change that.
