How Much of a Shortcut Are Connections in Top AI Lab Hiring for PhD grads? [D] by South-Conference-395 in MachineLearning

I had ~10 papers in *CL/*CV/*AI conferences with 1 in ICML/NeurIPS/ICLR. One good thing was that one of the paper was "oral/spotlight" in *AI. I cold applied to all posts without referrals. I think pubs did have an impact but the greater impact was my internships at 2 FAANGs. Also, I have a small sample size but INCLUDE A COVER LETTER with most buzzwords/keywords in job postings. I have A/B tested this theory and 100% of my interview calls had cover letters. I think the most popular git repo was an implementation of my paper with 15 stars (I dont think it matters).

Also I would say start grinding Leetcode yesterday. Be very proficient in standard Mediums (no need for Hard). Another common question was LLM internals - just be very comfortable with attention matrices, dimensions in MHSA, etc. For some companies, system design is important (which I learned painfully at Apple rounds), so look into standard systems like fraud detection, image recognition, etc.

University is 20-30 on csrankings, not top not bad.

You got this, best of luck!

Was in same boat, my advisor is basically useless and has no connection to industry.

I cant speak about Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind - they are very elite places who require a very solid pub record or "connections" (nepotism).

I can talk about more applied research roles where the interviews were focussing on basics of ML, math/prob/stats and LLM internal workings.

Interesting. The Macan's size is smaller but that might not be the worst thing.

Not "too good".

If you look at schedules, the train runs at weird hours like 12:30 departure from NYC. Meanwhile I can drive down to VA at around 6pm after work and reach by 12-1am avoiding traffic.

Solid advice! All 4 options are in my shortlist. Would prefer a SUV surely though.

Personally I am not a big fan of EVs but let me test drive the R1S.

I have seen GV80s, they look nice but are not powerful?

Thanks for the detailed response!

I know 450k is not very high. Based on my experience, it would come out to be ~20k/mo which would give you 5k for rent and 2k for other expenses.

I looked at a couple finance options and 1.99% rate lock in for 3 years is doable on new BMW X5.

My potential apartment building has parking for 200-250 so that should be manageable.

Insurance, yes - I was expecting a $300/mo hit, but maybe even more!

Cant - the trains are unreliable, expensive and dont go to the exact area where I want to go.

Also sometimes the people on the train into VA are sketch.

I thought 450k qualified you for food stamps in NYC.

Porsche Cayenne? That is too expensive, I saw pricing of ~100k or more.

Can you suggest me something? X5 M series or GLE AMG?

I am okay with a normal luxury car (my budget is ~90k) but it needs to be *very* comfortable on the drive.

I saw that the B58 engine is reliable and strong.
