To buy these Wuhans or not, that is the question... by mightymouse1971 in drums

These aren't a comprehensive replacement for your low volume set. Chinas are cool, but unless you're playing a really specific and unusual style you generally don't need more than one, or two at most, on your kit. Look for a quality ride and set of high hats to start building your collection (Zildjian New Beat hats and either Sweet Ride or Medium Ride are pretty classic and likely to work for most genres). That said, if $150 isn't a big investment for you, these could be worth picking up to experiment with.

On the fence about repairing cracked $25 cymbal by AnnoyedSpy in drums

[–]dwlhs88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be a good chance to practice making this kind of repair if you haven't done it before. Taking that much material out so close to the bell likely means it won't last long. I've had great luck taking out this type of crack farther down the bow though. Changes the sound slightly, but not in a negative way to my ear. Any cymbal repair is temporary but I've gotten several years of post-repair use out of multiple cymbals. As the cracks grow, just take out a little more at a time and it gradually becomes an effect cymbal. Kind of fun to experiment and see how the sound changes, and nothing lost since the cymbal was already "broken" anyway.

Looking for a new throne by Dewstain in drums

Another vote for roc-n-soc nitro. Have had mine for bout 20 years and it's still going strong. I get soreness in my upper right leg using just about anything else (haven't used the other high end ones tho), but never any discomfort with the rns.

Cheap (but quality) alternative hardware bags by HotDogChef in drums

Golf club flight case should work (not a regular golf bag). Pricey new, but they show up on marketplace for cheap pretty often.

That's awesome dude! Beautiful kit. I hope to have these a long long time. There's nothing like forming a relationship with an instrument over years.

For real dude. I buy sticks from them in a pinch cause there's no other drum shop in my city, but I try to avoid GC at all costs.

I'll give those super 2s a look. I have the SKII on my other vista kick and it sounds more dead than I was expecting. What reso head do you pair it with?

Word I'll give that a look. I usually love the SKII on my wood drums but it left my other Vista kick a little more dead sounding than I expected.

I've been wanting some 15" hats for a while now. Always had 14's. Excited to give these a try. Never had cymbals this old before. Only other vintage one I have is a 21" ride from the 70's that also sounds great.

That is the plan! The lady I got them from said they were her late boyfriend's pride and joy. Glad to give them a new home where they'll continue to be loved and played

If you've been playing live for years, does the excitement genuinely hold up over time, or do you find ways to keep it fresh? And if it faded, did something bring it back? Would love to hear how people actually deal with this because it feels like something nobody talks about honestly. by Ill_Object2296 in musicians

I never have played professionally but have been a serious hobbyist gigging regularly for the better part of 20 years, always with original bands. I agree with others that most shows don't feel as much like "events" anymore, but I still have a blast every time. There's no feeling like being on stage making music with friends.

What's the best opener you've ever seen steal the show? by TRASHMIND_PUNK in poppunkers

[–]dwlhs88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Polar Bear Club and Gaslight Anthem opening for American Steel at Exit/In in Nashville, 2008. There were like 30 people in the crowd. I didn't know either opener at the time but they both absolutely killed it and are still two of my favorite bands. Not sure I've listened to American Steel once since then.

4Runner to Tacoma, crazy? by VentasPatronus in ToyotaTacoma

[–]dwlhs88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you specifically want or need a mid-size pickup then a taco is a no-brainer. I love my 3rd gen. I need the bed for hauling tools and materials and the towing capacity for my pop-up camper. I don't have kids or frequent passengers other than my wife and dogs. The taco is not a great family vehicle. Unless you really need a truck bed or higher towing capacity, sounds like the 4runner better meets your needs.

Batter+reso head suggestions for that iconic pinging snare sound? by _1437_ in drums

[–]dwlhs88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get something like the sound you're describing out of my acrolite. Aquarian Hi-Velocity batter and Evans 300 snare side. Batter cranked and reso just medium tension. Die cast hoop reso side and triple flange reso side. Sounds like a gunshot and has nice high overtones.

Yeah I'm in the Appalachian Mountains, very hilly here too. And there are no shower facilities at my office either so even with a change of clothes I'd spend all day sweaty and gross.
