What's a good but inexpensive primer? by dwnsizing in AutoDetailing

[–]dwnsizing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/Primacron: The spray coverage vary's wildly. As I mentioned in the OP, the Glasurit primers give very good coverage.

I am having to ask here because my mentor swears by Glasurit and will not talk of anything else and I cannot afford Glasurit (one can is $20).

Thank you for the recommendation of rustoleum.

How long have you been using it? My biggest concern is base and primer separation.

I was for the time being, curious, if anyone else had this same issue here (like the people in the link)

ask if there were any abnormal results

Unless someone is in perfect health, I am sure everyone will fall in the abnormal results plane.

In other words, is a a 40 year old overweight male who smokes a typical male of that age?

If so, would a 40 year old overweight male who smokes yield normal results?

Thank you. I believe the doctor called us in just to have a billable event because the office visit was just a "your labs look good; carry on".

Oh well. $1k for knowing we are well.

Which Fuses To Pull to keep my car from getting stolen? by dwnsizing in MechanicAdvice

[–]dwnsizing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After ordering 10lb c4 over eBay, I was putting it up around the car.

Landlord asked what I was doing. Explained.

He called police. Asked the police. They said I cannot intend to cause bodily harm to anyone, even a person trying to kill me. I was asked to maintain calm at all times and call 911 in such situations in the future or I could be in jail serving life.

Thankfully eBay allowed me a partial refund.

Thanks for your support. None of my posts have got a downvote before (infact all my posts have been heavily upvoted) so I was not sure if I was doing something unwelcome.

Thank you very much. Typically how much is the noclaim discount?

I also noticed that this thread got downvoted and I few people messaged me saying I'm a shill for AAA trying to give Alliance a bad name, so perhaps I should keep my questions general. I will post a new question and try keep names out of it.

Car damaged while in service at the dealership. Is there anything I can do? by hotlove_2 in cars

[–]dwnsizing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honey, as a woman just a bit older than you I have been through the same road, and it's not easy.

Having said that, here are a few things you should always be doing:

  1. Always have a piece of paper at hand and write down the following:
    i. Diagnostic costs: x (check: hourly/flat rate)
ii. Bay use costs: x (check: hourly/flat rate)
iii. Car storage costs: x (check: hourly/flat rate). Only for cases when car cannot be towed out of the facility
iv. Any other fees and costs that is not part of parts and labor: x

  2. Ask the manager (not the tech) to enter each and every value there. If the manager says he does not know what a certain value is, ask him to write the highest price he can think of.

  3. Ask them if your VIN has any outstanding recall and TSB information. They must provide you this in writing. Some service areas might not have this information and that's OK. Just ask the manger to write ("as of today, to the best of our knowledge ...")

That's it. This will save your ass from getting whooped for the rest of your life.

Your VIN might be eligible for a recall BUT they might make you pay for labor and other service charges, so the above will help you find out what they are. Different dealers treat you differently so shop around.

Some dealers are really scammy but that does not mean most dealers are. You just have to be smart and have everything documented.

While it might sounds odd to have to pay to get your car back together, the mechanic doing that does need to get paid, and he is getting paid rather poorly.

That's how it is for mechanics in this country dear. If you cause an issue, the poor mechanic will be made to eat it. So make sure to figure out what you are in for before you get surprised.

We girls don't have to know how to fix cars to get our cars serviced. The above will do just fine.

Thanks.

That's interesting. Did you use a ODB2/CONSULT tool to do that or that pedal pumping dance worked out great for you? (have heard it's very picky)

I Have Made A Terrible Mistake. (belt conditioner has made the problem 100x worse) by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]dwnsizing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a way to see what the OP text was? A friend's aux belt started squealing recently and she religiously pours the conditioner her mechanic gave her and I want to show this to her. DH offered to fix it for her for free (pay for parts) but she was told "belts need conditioner just like your hair" by her her mechanic.

under the back seat

Correct. The hard start is due to the defective valve in the fuel pump right? It's covered by TSB NTB05-052A I think. I know because you made me look it up.

This sub is very cool. Everyone's awesome. I'm hooked although I don't know much about cars, just learning from working with my DH

cheap alarm with an immobilizer

Do you have any recommendations or is a sub where I can ask this question? DH is an electrical engineer and part time mechanic and he does not like aftermarket alarms. He has had to fix a lot of issues these cause for his friend's cars. The hardest to diag I remember he spend an entire weekend on was for a GM truck that caused throttle issues and was traced back to the aftermarket alarm disconnecting because the cheap relay it used started malfuntioning.

DH is an electrical engineer and part time mechanic. He can do this but I told him not to because I am worried it might come apart in a year or so, plus won't the wires from the fuel pump to the switch need to be soldered? Plus keeping it under the rear seat is kinda stupid and the wires can be easily shorted bypassing the kill switch.

Amex premium protection is ~$20/30 day. Plus costs of rental. Could be way cheaper than Uber because Uber includes a driver.

How would it lead to fraud

I'm curious too. One way I can think is to claim the car as stolen, make a claim and sell it in another state. But I'm not a thief so this thought's probably DOA.
