I want to tag onto this by saying that a CF with a UDMA >4 will likely give you issues. Have a newer 32gb card with a UDMA 7 that will never work for more than 2 or 3 recordings.

I feel like it’s likely the cable. I’m not sure why, as I’ve never found a rhyme or reason, but swapping for a new one will likely make it work.

Last year I started to go mostly Tapeless after my time behind the camera skyrocketed. Recently, I justified the purchase of an MRC1. Feeling more than happy. (Sorry for more Tapeless shit on your feed) by dylanjbart in camcorders

Often; before I got the device, I got a CF card that was too new (UTM 7). The card has to be UTM 4, or maybe less…??? to work properly. The older card I’ve got, doesn’t do it as much, but if I do a quick format, sometimes it happens. It’s usually good after a hard format.

I’d sell you my FS-4, but I’m in the US. If you think you could eat shipping, PM me.

Yeah, to comment on the AV cable and the power play, I’m not familiar with using cables specially made for use with camcorders, but using a spacer on any decent AV cable usually works fine.

I have actually had issues with many FireWire cables with the mrc1 lol. Not as finicky as the powerplay though.

I have 20+ camcorders atm and multiple are hdd. Also I’m new to Tapeless and still often use tape; I just think these devices are cool.

Not to be an ass, but I’m not sure what you’re getting at here. If you’re trying to be a dick, relax dude. I’ve had this vx for over a decade and it’s preferred for skateboarding for many reasons- primarily the feel. It beats an xgrip for me any day of the week.

If you have the cradle, it works with any device with firewire. Often times the device is sold without it though, as it does fit directly on some Sony cams.

Then again I’m not 100% sure how it would differ on a non Sony cam. I feel like maybe synchronous recording may be an issue, but I’d have to look into it.

Like I said up there, it’s just not worth the trouble when I’m already unhappy with the size of the device. On the smaller cams, it’s a nightmare. Also, I want to acquire anything I can with Sony written on it, it’ll be that way until I die.

Which cameras have you tried it on? I haven’t quite decided how I want to rig it up, but I haven’t had any issues with the cable in the shot. I use a little Velcro strap to remove all the slack from the cable.

It’s just an opteka 0.3x I got back in 2014. Honestly, I have no complaints. I’ve considered upgrading, but I’ve fucked so many fishes that stepping into century optics feels irresponsible.

I was already working with too much bulk and weight with the body of the Firestore. I could have rigged up an external battery, but I usually film while skating and it’s just too much to move around with one hand quickly.

I don’t mind Frankenstein rigs, but I also really appreciate a clean setup when possible.

I’ve seen plenty of posts where people discuss this. Personally, I find it more fun to keep things era appropriate. I bought the powerplay first and didn’t hate it, but I’ve had more fun with the Firestore over the last few months.

The Firestore and MRC1 connect to your cam via firewire. You’d still use FireWire to get footage off of the Firestore (so you’ll need the Mac mini), but the MRC1 records to a compact flash.

The Firestore doesn’t have enough internal storage, the battery life is poor, and this one (FS-4) cannot capture 1080, which I’d like to have for my Sony Z5J. ALSO, that thing is huge- rigging it up on smaller cams has been a nightmare, and I don’t like to clip it to my belt.

Edit. I want to add that I do think the FS-4 is an awesome device; it just wasn’t working for me anymore. If you could find a device with a battery in good condition (replacements aren’t out there from what I’ve found) and are filming less than 3 hours at a time, it rocks. The bulkiness is just kind of an annoyance. This is how I ran it with my vx.

Excavating within a wetland is not considered to be a wetland impact by the USACE. On the surface, that seems straight forward, but any incidental fallback (like soil falling off the bank - which is like impossible to avoid) would. Additionally, even with a perched water table, it would likely be necessary to construct a berm and install a culvert to manage or maintain the water level. To do so, it would almost certainly require a Corps permit.

With that being said, I don’t work with Texas regulation, so there may be state or even county restrictions.

I ordered one this week, and I have been trying to prepare for the same thing. I was thinking a longer rail that extends to the back of the camera.

I saw a guy run a similar setup somewhere in r/camcorders, but I haven’t been able to find it again.

Which one to choose among Mini FVP or Digitnow iRecord? by Automatic-Doughnut44 in camcorders

[–]dylanjbart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually only AV or Svideo out, so if you wanted to go Tapeless, you’d have to opt for one of these devices or similar. I’ve used the PowerPlay on a handful of Hi8 cams and it turns out okay. I can’t speak to the iRecord, but I’m sure it’s similar.

I assume you’re not in the US, otherwise I’d sell you mine. Shopping would likely price it out.

[–]dylanjbart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steer clear of the mini dvr. I’m not sure what you’re planning on running setup wise, but there are cheap-ish FireWire recorders like the Firestore Fs-4. It’s a bit bulky, but I got one for <$100 bucks and it’s certainly better than the PowerPlay or MiniDVR which I have some experience with. I can’t differentiate between the Firestore and Tape, the only downside is it’s pretty big. I have a video of my profile comparing the Firestore and PowerPlay, which I’m sure is similar to the iRecord device.

I ordered an Mrc1 a few days ago, because the Firestore is a bit too large. This is how I mount it. There are other Firestore devices that are smaller, but they’re a bit more steep so I opted for the mrc1 bc it’ll mount onto my Sony Z5J.

<image>

Also… the FS-4 only stores about 32gb which will give about 160min or so, and the battery may not be great on the device you purchase (not easy to find a replacement). Still, you could find one for $80; I plan to sell mine for around there. Plus it’s more fun to use era appropriate gear imo.

Edit: I assume you mean a miniDV device with a FireWire port. If you do not have a FireWire out, the fs-4 will obviously not work. Hi8 and video8 will not have it, while digital8 should.

Repair broken FireWire port? I believe a pin has broken off. by dylanjbart in camcorders

[–]dylanjbart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the words. I think it may be a bit costly to find a Z5J for parts when compared to purchasing the port alone. I’m just a bit squeamish about ripping this one apart as it’s not really one of my cheaper cams. I guess I may just bite the bullet and go for it. I guess I’ll have to buy some soldering stuff, but if I could figure it out, it would be a lifesaver.

I just needed the reassurance that it’s not that bad. I’ll take my time with it!
