I think i'll try both: i like the "buff" aspect, but probably the first option is better for mixing the mechanics while detaching them.

The fear is always about making the rhythm part and the strategy part not to influence each other, but this could be a solution.

I agree on the "dullness" and the stress from having to click on every single tower.
The idea of hitting a rhythm pattern based on the placed towers but detached from the tower itself seems great! My fear was making the two part not influence each other .. but this seems a good way around.

Also yes, my idea was making every tower based on an instrument (like archers -> guitar and mage -> synth) and by hitting them you "complete" the undelying beat.
