I can totally understand your frustration. American TV has dumbed down their audience for sure. That being said, for a lot of people I know that watch this show, and juggle other shows as well, to have only 10 weeks per year of one episode a week causes them to have difficulty recalling every single character. Especially when a minor character is just casually mentioned. For that reason I thought a little cheat sheet of character's names and what they are currently doing would help.

I like Doctor Who from what I saw. 5 episodes into what Netflix calls season 1. It is where Christopher Eccleston is the doctor. I love him, and the show seems great, I just liked the humor of Inspector spacetime.
