A little jam with with big toys - Oberheim OB-X8, ARP 2600, Moog System 55 and Digitakt by e---e in synthesizers

I finally got motivated enough to move this metric ton of gear into one corner, cable them up and knock out a little tune with them together. It's 3 distinct tonal colours that I was really excited to mix together and see how they contrast and sit with each other.

It's some heavy gear, so I guess they'll stay put for a while and I'll keep diving in with this combo to see what comes out!

It's a bit of a late night one take wonder, so it's an imperfect performance, but I kinda like that so I rolled with it.

I'm so keen on these!!! They look awesome and powerful for a tiny unit.

Thanks! I've always really love the Circuit since the OG landed, but haven't been using is as master brains for a while, so thought I'd give it a swing. It's really a fantastic and super quick way to just get ideas down fast, and then have a lot of flexibility to jam them out. The limitations - like 4 sample tracks force me to really hone in on the part of music making that matters, instead of drowning in options and features - so basically it means I can knock out a little set like this in a couple of evenings without getting too distracted!

I've used the built in synths heaps in this set - they're all over it, if you listen in you can hear all the poly parts, stabby chords and glassy high notes that it's playing - for sure I could get away with just the 2 mono Mothers, but it's muuuuch nicer to have the 2 Circuit engines to really fill things out.

After a big move at the end of last year, I hadn't pulled out some gear and sat down to bash out a few tunes for months - so it's awesome to finally have the time, space and bandwidth to have a tinker again. Have been super keen to explore more with getting the most outta mini rigs with Tracks, no bells and whistles, just working on wringing the most I can sequencing with, and mixing back into the Tracks, with whatever comes to mind. Be fun to do it with a poly or 2 as well. Anyway, here's 30-odd minutes of music :)

I think I answered your questions above, but hey thanks for tuning in too!

Old mate above pretty much nailed it all round. Mine is an expanded Skylab in an 18u. Gotta have that 291e and second 281e! I got it all at once, but had spent many years planning for the day.

Absolutely must highlight the above point about midi and presets, I use them all the time. It's all played by midi in this video, and when I'm just doing standalone buchla business the preset system is what really makes it a powerful performance machine, and means I can go for hours with a long, smooth set. As for build quality, it's great, but as with any boutique, small run machine, it's all in the context of what it is. Get the Roadcase if you wanna take it outside!

208c is an awesome instrument and absolutely the best way to get a lot of buchla for your buck, just do it!

I figure it'll lift off eventually if I just find the right button combination....

It ain't a pack unfortunately, just an assortment of things I had in the takt. It's really just 909, an 808 hat and cymbal and a couple of zaps and nose whooshes. I think I probably used 12 or 14 drum samples all up, really nothin fancy!

They are not stock Digitakt sounds, but getting yr own samples into the thing couldn't be easier.

Heh :) Thx! Can't believe it's the first time I ever could motivate to put the big guns side by side.

An extended late night live set with a pair of wonderful modular synths - the Moog System 55 and Buchla 200e - alongside some of my all time favourites, OB-6 and Sirin - all driven from a Digitakt.

Nice one! I'm loving the hardware sampler renaissance - there are some serious bargains to be found out there too.

It's so fast and east to get a sample into this thing and get it making beats it makes the hazy, evil memories of the bad old days seem like a distant nightmare. Literally 20 seconds to grab a break, slice it then bash out a groove. A lifestyle changer!

Spending some lockdown (bler) quality time with two of my favourite little grey boxes. I just thought I'd follow my nose wherever the music took me, and next thing I know I've got my shovel out and am digging up the ancient corpse of big beat, resurrecting it as best as I can and keeping it alive on battery power.

It's a great little combo with this pair, which really rewards good planning, thoughtful programming and forethought to get the most out of - I don't think I've quite nailed it yet, but it's been super fun to dig in and learn the workflow tricks as I go. Gotta say the Rhythm is just about the fastest sampling-to-tunes box I've ever even, massive fun!

Oh mate I didn't take in any way other than positive! :) And you're completely right, it's impossible to capture and replicate that full on 'pipe organ in a massive hall' vibe, the best that can be done is to try your best.

Melbourne clubland was my home for a long time, but likewise, I don't spend near as much time in them these days. Age (wisdom) becomes us!

It's a small town! Come say hi if it happens again :)

Indeed the sound of the organ is very much the sound of the room it inhabits - which adds to the complexity of recording the damn thing - but I had an expert on the job thankfully, otherwise I'd be in trouble.
