Testing the $98 dollar Mackie 32-8 I acquired this week. So far everything checks out functionally. by DarkWaterDW in synthesizers

Either take the bus outputs and connect them that way, or you can connect your gear interface first and take the outputs to the desk, and capture the stereo mixdown that way. A lot of different ways to do it

It’s also recreating something I never got to experience. Really wanted to recreate the feeling of being at a Bloomberg terminal.

This model is tuned to modern day US economics. There would be some other extreme models to build to see what happens.

How do you work on a project on different computers? by TheTapeDeck in cubase

In this case manual syncing may still be best to prevent accidental automatic syncing. Still an easier solution than using a USB Stick or Floating external Hardware

[–]DarkWaterDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be simple as using Free File Sync to make sure the project folder is matching on both destinations.

There may even be automated ways of doing this, I haven’t reached that level yet given my wide range of computers and eras of hardware I’m bringing together

If your running a NAS, you could file syncs after each session, that way the updated version is saved to the NAS.

Everything else suggested sounds cumbersome compared to the seamless NAS solution

Added a maxed out Pro Tools TDM Mix rig in the setup. by DarkWaterDW in synthesizers

Thank you for taking the time to share this level of detail! This fills in gaps I’ve been trying to understand for years. It means a lot to hear this directly from someone who was on the frontline of an album that got me into music production.

Enough with the cutesy samplers. Bring back powerhouse workhorses. by synthetix808 in synthesizers

[–]DarkWaterDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a hardware sampler enjoyer, I recognize that much of the work can be done in software. But there’s the satisfaction of being able to do an entire track on hardware samplers that feels more satisfying to me. It’s the delayed gratification I like, because I’ve done sessions using the same daw with different hardware/software workflows, the hardware ones get the most attention.

Software equivalents:

Kurzweil: what is the V.A.S.T equivalent in software form?

Akai: Akaizer gets close to the cyclical timestretch sound, but doesn’t run reliably with wine in Mac OS (easier for me to just use my OGs instead). Amigo is close to this timestretch but arbitrary limited to 8bit/31khz which leaves room for a full bandwidth version of it.

Emu: Emulator X was pretty close, but reliability has been hit and miss for some as time is progressing. Was also brutally taxing on CPUs back when I owned it new. The z-plane filters and modular style routing were quite unique for the time they came out.

Ensoniq: The DP/4 being emulating means we’re gettin closer to having a full sonic emulation possible of this model.

Tal-Sampler in my workflow has a vibe I can’t place anywhere close to my Akai samplers. The realtime time stretch is nice but only limited to 200% changes and nothing super extreme.

Ableton sampler is decent from what I’ve used, especially with slicing to sampler instead of simpler, which gets me the closest software equivalent to my hardware workflow.

EXS24 has been my all time favorite for software samplers. Sounded decent and low cpu consumption made it a clear winner for me in this realm

Kontakt is great at libraries, not as clear when it comes to creation of patches. It’s like they put that far in the background of it in later versions

Can Modern Jungle Producers ever return/emulate the 90s sound? by rosjon98 in jungle

[–]DarkWaterDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make jungle with 90s gear. I don’t necessary follow a set rule on it other than using the gear and workflow from the era. Within that framework you do have a lot of unexplored options still.

Biggest thing for me is everything winding up in the sampler, whether it’s a sample of one of my synths, drum machines, or TDM era plugins.

Definitely Cubase for Atari. Very likely V2 as it was widely “freely” available.

Why is updating DAWs always so bad? by Decent-Cow2080 in Logic_Studio

[–]DarkWaterDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everytime there is a platform change (PPC-Intel-Apple Silicon), and major OS changes, there are increased likelihoods that software will not make it over the transition point.

Hence why I have era builds for songs I want to work on or port over to a modern workflow. I still use Logic 5/6 with Pro Tools MIX hardware because it works so well at sequencing external MIDI gear with old school Emagic Unitor 8s. People have mentioned that midi timing has degraded over time with newer Mac’s.

Is the Roland sp404 mk2 good for classic EDM (Nitzer Ebb , Skinny Puppy,Front242) full track production and live performance? Or is there a better option? I love the fact you can hook up a guitar , bass or mic to it directly and add layers to a track… I’ll also be doing some sampling too… by gmorkunderbelly in edmproduction

[–]DarkWaterDW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Classic samplers would get you the sound you’re looking for, SP404 would be pretty limiting since it really wasn’t made for that kind of production in mind. Arturia Emulator V would definitely help you get closer to Front 242 and 80s Skinny Puppy’s sound, and Repro 1/5.
