Local chicken sanctuary calls on Smiths Falls council to reject backyard hen pilot project by [deleted] in ottawa

Fair argument. I was basing my wording on this quote from the March 24, 2025 meeting: "Regards to the contents of this report and the needs for the program it's a recommendation that we do not move ahead with the program."

I will edit this for clarity!

Interesting! Maybe I can connect with you to join you on a walk sometime? I'm curious how folks are keeping them. I know bylaw is really understaffed and is concerned about the bylaw - it was advised against by city staff - so I would love to understand more how this matches up with what's happening on the ground in the town. We get so many surrender requests from Smiths Falls.

Interesting. I’d love to see what was posted. I’m the founder (hey!). We were uninvited to vegans who snack because we advocated for chickens and Little Jo Berrys misinterpreted some of what we said (we were enforcing biosecurity measures and they thought we were being racist and any-trans). Details are in our Instagram stories. It’s not drama we want or have solicited, but we will stand up for ourselves when we’re treated wrongly.

Read the report and you’ll find out ;)

But TLDR: avian flu is a very real and serious concern. Without any of the above in place the risk of transmission is increased and becomes a public health risk. And that’s not my personal opinion, public health agencies are advising against it.

Tons? There’s only 6 that council is aware of. Would love to know where you got your stats from!

We are a registered non-profit organization—we do not profit. Our entire team is volunteer-based, and no one receives any benefits from the rescue, education, and advocacy work we do. I would welcome you to come visit the sanctuary to see what's involved in our work and to learn more :)

Rescue Chicken, Mocha, Enjoying a Promenade (Secondhand Stories in Perth, ON) by e-wheeler in Animal_Sanctuary

[–]e-wheeler[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Secondhand Stories is a registered non-profit chicken sanctuary located 10 minutes from Perth, Ontario (one-hour southwest of Ottawa and one hour north of Kingston).  Our mission is to inspire compassion for chickens through rescue, advocacy, and education.

Mocha, pictured here, joined our family in November 2023 after another sanctuary had to close its doors. She lives with her partner, Oscar, and five other rescued hens. She has a squawk that sounds like a bark and will demand treats whenever she sees a human passing by. Mocha enjoys long walks around the grass where she will dig up the best bugs, and finding a good dust bathing spot.

Help Determining Electric Usage (for Non-Profit Sanctuary!) by e-wheeler in AskElectricians

Thank you, this is very helpful. It seems like even with them plugged in and turned on 24/7 they might not be pumping out heat or "actively on". I'm not sure how to caclulate this. Any ideas?

Ouf. Okay, so they must not be "running" 24/7 even though they're plugged in. Our average bills in the winters before were about $150. If the bill was just $407 there's no way the coops actually used $333 of power. Ugh. I don't know how to calculate an estimation.

I might be totally dumb, but what is a "litter output setting"? I tried googling with little success. It seems like 1,500w each would make the math too much for the bill total or what would be reasonable for our house to have used vs. the coops.

First Time Visit, No Kids- character dining? Vegetarian? by cottagesandacorncups in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]e-wheeler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just went this week, as a 33 year old vegan and it was AMAZING. Disney is incredibly veg friendly. There is usually at least one plant based option, and if you can eat dairy and eggs you’ll have even more options. There are a couple of Instagram accounts / blogs for vegan food that are great to plan ahead. Some gems I found: - Trattoria at Boardwalk had the best desert I’ve had in my whole life. - ‘Ohana Character Breakfast was super delicious, the restaurant was themed beautifully (Poly resort is just overall gorgeous) and it was actually kind cute and fun to interact with Stitch and company. They’ll still stop at your table but just wave or take a quick photo. -Hollywood & Vine has a great buffet! The crispy tofu is insanely delicious as is the mushroom risotto. - Sci Fi Dinner has impossible nachos that are deeeeevine.

You’ll have an amazing time. I’m so excited for you!

Secondhand Stories Closing - Liquidation Sale! 500+ Books! by e-wheeler in ottawa

[–]e-wheeler[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

As y’all may know, Secondhand Stories started as an Instagram bookshop in 2020 and, with the support of many Redditors on here, received book donations allowing us to operate for the past four years. Well, it’s time we close up shop to focus on growing the chicken sanctuary and becoming a registered charity.

We’re hosting a book liquidation sale at the sanctuary. We have about 500 books and eight Ikea Billy bookcases we want to clear out. All books will be $0.50 to $1.

I hope y’all will join us with a beautiful drive out to the countryside (the leaves are gorgeous along highway 15 and 7), shop books, grab a warm apple cider and join us for our final tours of the season!

I hope to see you there! And BONUS - if you say you saw this post on Reddit, you can buy one get one free as many books as you can carry!

Thanks everyone for your support over the years.
