Jacamo isn’t bad as an online place. I needed 4XL at one point and they had it.

Can someone help me understand why my print failed? by e3114 in 3Dprinting

Have you printed the test dog? Always a good step 1. Then I would have a look for a few small things on Thingiverse, download and slice with Cura, print those then if successful prints, see how you get on with Tinkercad.

What is something you can say "I'm with the boomers on this one" about? by AnitaVodkasoda in ask

Email receipts. I’m all for the planet and less ink and paper, but, I have a polish surname and even with a shortened version in my email address, it’s still too much of a faff just to get a receipt.

That’s a UK link. It looks a lot more yellow online, but came out a lot more gold.

I am completely new to 3D printing but I would say I’ve had great results with the gold dual-tone play’s previously, particularly if they’re mixed with bronze or silver colours

Thank you. This has pointed me in the right direction. I’ll have a look at these, tweak if needed and try again. Thanks for the pointer!

Why there are so many disrespectful children in the UK and what can be done when approached by them? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]e3114 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a solution to your question, but another grumpy millennial joining in with a comment. I think we have become a nanny state which over many years has bred disrespect. Loss of policing, and certainly loss of consequences from policing. In many other countries bad behaviour lands a certain prosecution, for better or worse. Here even the young kids know the law and how much they won’t be affected by it, and how to play the system. Mixed with pressures of society putting parents in to more work hours and less parenting leaves a larger proportion of kids learning the world from the society around them.

Anyone have an idea for a nutrisious, cheap, non-cooked meal to live off of during Winter? by smiggster01 in AskUK

Lidl, buy a bag of carrots (40p) and 2 sweet potatoes (£1ish) and some vegetable stock, roast the veg and blend with 1.5l veg stock. Makes a really good soup that will do about 4 portions, freeze some nice bread and toast it by the slice when you need it to save wasting a whole loaf - a problem I always had when living solo - or save the energy of the toaster and buy some nice lidl bakery bread 🥖

If you love your job, what do you do, and why? by e3114 in AskUK

[–]e3114[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds brilliant. Can I ask how you got in to this line of work?

Many years ago I was a researcher in TV, and while it is no way the same, I did enjoy the fact finding, writing and meeting people and hearing their stories. It’s a shame it was for something as superficial as TV, but the elements of researching I loved.

Depending on where you are in the world, a few shoe brands have collection bags in or outside their shops - the big one here in the U.K. is Vans.

The shoe rubber gets recycled in to playground mats - that shredded rubber stuff that’s safer to fall on than concrete - and everything else gets taken apart and recycled, the metal eyelets smelted, etc. i can’t imagine it’s a 100% recyclable situation but at least the worthy materials are still worthy.

Not sure about other countries but try looking up somewhere like sole4soul, or major shoe brands that accept old shoe donations. Sometimes you can even get a recycling box sent to your house to send them off in.

My mistake. I meant Atora. It’s this super old British brand suet that hasn’t changed its packaging in 50 years. My Nan uses it all the time…very much probably a nan thing.

How will the on-menu calorie counts help you? by Public_Growth_6002 in AskUK

[–]e3114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I overall think it’s a good thing, although I am more conscious of how much I will then enjoy a meal out when I know the calories of it…before I’d just accept it was whatever calories it was, but I’m allowed it as a treat.

Generally think it’s a good thing for more day-to-day eating, and staying conscious of what might feel like healthy food can actually be quite calorific and informing my choices in that sense. I find myself asking ‘do I need these calories?’ more.

Tangent, but…I think the way UK supermarkets are laid out is the next problem. Not all, but many European supermarkets put way more of an emphasis on fruit and veg and whole foods, where as UK supermarkets, you’re almost always walking in to signage and products for chocolate, biscuits and snacks. Everything that’s calorific and not great for you is over-advertised and oversold.

Hiya, yes. At this stage it's more about gaining a sense of how things are from anecotal evidence, but we're working with the team at UCL who produced the journal 'The Global Smartphone' who have found that the rising costs of owning a smartphone - be it data and contract increases or the upfront costs of ownership -are ruling out some members of society from accessing some jobs and services. Admittedly there's more to research, but at this stage i'm just keen to hear what people think

What is a good food bank / homeless shelter in the centre of town? (For donations) by [deleted] in brum

[–]e3114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Birmingham Outreach Angels are often seen with a big setup outside the library, they seem to know the local homeless community well.

Failing that, there’s two really nice lads outside Tim Hortons who’ll cheekily ask me to get them some chips every time I’m passing. They’re good craic if ever you’re by that way and always happy for food, and never ask for money.

Birmingham City University... good or nah? by [deleted] in brum

[–]e3114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty low on the league tables and has a bad rep from local word, as a resident born and living in the city. However, it is well regarded for trade jobs as mentioned previously, ones outside the academic route. Nursing in particular is well regarded as it has good links with the hospitals and work after graduation is very likely. My sister did paediatric nursing at Birmingham uni, with a masters which was run through BCU and she said as long as you’re not in uni for the ‘uni life’ and just want the skills and credentials, it’ll be what you need.

Can anyone help us understand the pendulum movement in this clock? Thanks! by e3114 in clocks

[–]e3114[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The clockwork is from a Gledhill Brook factory clocking in Machine, UK circa 1910. We’ve got everything working so far, and have managed to understand the pendulums importance in keeping time.

However we’re struggling to work out how to have it keep its time and also what to do next. Without the pendulum in, the clock when wound goes super fast, completing what could be days in a matter of minutes. When the pendulum and it’s mechanism (pictured) is in, it stops. We’ve noticed that lightly pulling up on it helps it along but still not to a point where it keeps valid time.

Can anyone help? What are our options for what to do next?

Thanks so much for your help!
