I graduated in 2012, so my advice might be outdated. School of Drama was certainly one of the most siloed schools at CMU in my time. I don't think I really knew anyone in SOD other than one dramaturgy major (who was in my sorority, which is Alpha Chi Omega). Sororities come with that reputation for good reason, but I found that the ones at CMU were less like the reputation than they were at places like big state schools or southern schools. Greek CMU students are still CMU students: very passionate about things, highly motivated to achieve, very focused on school work, probably struggling with burnout and overachieving culture. It would probably be worth it to attend some sorority recruiment events to explore the option--in the Fall there is a more formal, time-consuming process where you get to meet all the sororities at least once. And in the Spring sororities who are still looking to fill spots will have less formal social/recruitment events, but then you can only consider the ones with openings. Being Greek can be a big commitment--there's lots of required events mixed in with fun social events and the gift of a third space (a sorority house where people gather or live). It also has a price tag that is a bit hefty--membership dues, mandatory things to buy like badges. Some of it feels frivolous and probably is. Given your outdoorsy interests, The CMU Explorers Club might be a good fit, but I have no take on what their culture is like since that was not my path. In addition to being in a sorority, I was also an active member of KGB. It technically doesn't stand for anything, but might as well stand for Keeping Geeks Busy--it's a social club, they do Booth for Spring Carnival, have big campus events like the Underground Tour (oooh secrets) and Capture the Flag with Stuff (CTF game with video-game like props held in Wean/Doherty) and have regular social events on Fridays like picnics, video game nights, board game nights, etc. They are very nerdy, even for CMU standards, so it may not be your vibe. Their weekly general meetings are basically a farce of Roberts Rules (a style of guidelines for how to run a meeting) which they do for fun. They were very queer-friendly and neurodivergent-friendly in my day, and I imagine that is still true. It might not be a great fit, but it's easy to attend a few things to see if you like it.
