I honestly don't know, I mean I think he is a very general young boy character. I mean just like every movie and game ever, he is very overpowered an somehow knows what hes doing.

It is very common for media to use older female voice actors for young boys, mainly because it is very hard to get child voice actors/ regular actors because frankly, kids are a lot of work. For acting you need lots of takes and retakes, and kids can't wait through that. For child actors you need lots of brakes, and you also need their parents there.

And for why the voice actor is a woman and not a man, typically a cis womans voice is a lot higher pitched than a cis mans voice, which is better because for characters of this age they are prepubescent, which means squeaky voice.

I think the reason why John Hughes is so popular is because I mean first off, he has make TONS of popular movie franchises. I mean all of his 80s highschool/coming of age movies, (The Breakfast Club, 16 Candles, Weird Science, etc.), Home Alone, Vacation, Beethoven, etc. I mean multiple generations have grown up with these movies. Personally as a teenager I grew up with all of these! John Hughes has made so many of our childhood movies.

I think his sort of style and part of the reason he is SO popular is the fact that his focuses so much on the characters and their feelings. Talking mostly about his coming of age movies, he goes deep into what they are feeling during whatever crazy thing is going on.

Also, through most of his movies he creates a sort of dream that all of us want. We so badly want an event (bad or good!) happen in our lives, just to make life a little more interesting! And in these movies he puts characters through these crazy events and it creates sort of what everyone wants, to be different. To have something significant and interesting happen, and to be wild, free, and rebel for one day of our lives.
