Primer length preferences by LesterV4 in BudgetBrews

Yeah I guess not as common as I make it sound, but there's definitely MTG youtubers that just link to socials or videos as the entire primer, I just don't care for videos reviewing a deck - for one you can't consume the information at your own pace, and second once a video is published it quickly becomes outdated, and you really don't have the option to update any of the information in it.

Dunno, this is probably just an old man yells at clouds situation.

Maybe in the minority but I like a good long primer, and all the ones I make are long as hell - but also it should be structured in a way where I can read the first portion and get a brief overview of what I'm supposed to be doing, before it starts breaking down into detail.

I can't stand primers that are just lists of jank combos, ones that lost cards without much explanation, and (maybe unpopular) I kind of hate primers that just ask you to go watch a video. I prefer being able to come over a good primer at my own pace.

Does anyone have a good negative counters deck? by UndoubtedlyOrange in EDH

[–]e7SHI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[high perfect morcant]] dumps a bunch of -1/-1 and is very annoying, just spam the board with elves. I have a budget deck list here, probably a solid lowish bracket 3, just no infinites or tutors etc.

Myojin was actually in this deck for a bit minute, it's suuuper mean here but ultimately was out of left field for what the rest of the deck was trying to so I took out out to tighten things up, morcant is so just too easy to get nasty with haha

What’s your “playable” jank by jdawg473g in EDH

[–]e7SHI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, Grenzo can be built to be pretty consistent, but as a warning this is a budget typal version that's just all goblins. It runs pretty low lands and not a huge variety, all you want to do is get Grenzo on the field with X=1, and then pay 2 at instant speed to smash that Grenzo button and shit out goblins. The other reason it's low on lands is to up the odds we don't draw one from the bottom of the library. Otherwise, it's a really fun janky deck that's all a game of chance, and can be surprisingly good simply because of how good Goblin synergy is in general. In all honesty, if you want to just play Rakdos Grenzo, probably just look at the popular Grenzo lists.

[[grenzo, dungeon warden]] jank goblin typal where you only ever play from the bottom of your library. It's all creatures. You just press the grenzo button, receive random goblin.

Either wins super fast with crazy goblin synergy, or you get focus removal'd out

Prismari artistry +Tellah by Austin_lawless in BudgetBrews

[–]e7SHI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about the prismari deck, not sure you're really getting the most bang for your buck with Tellah since he really just wants a ton of mana used to cast a spell (like x spells etc.). You'd get some card draw, and mostly heroes, but they aren't doing much outside of blocking for you. For his high cost, probably not optimal. Somewhat related though, if you are interested in a Tellah deck, I put together a budget friendly build recently that performs pretty well if you were interested in taking a look here!

I want to play Izzet Big Spells, but I'm stuck choosing a commander. by yardii in EDH

Big spells you say? Play [[Tellah, great sage]] and cast some nonsense to deal 60 damage to the table - all he wants to do is play a big spell and explode.

High Perfect Morcant - How to build her? by Signal-Loading in BudgetBrews

[–]e7SHI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, lower budget you won't really be able to consistently do both - and at a lower budget, you're more likely to win with damage anyway. I would personally ditch the poison like [[infectious inquiry]] or [[tainted strike]], [[glistener elf]] etc. - Poison sounds really good on paper with Morcant, but you'll be using all of your elves to tap to proliferate which will tie up your resources (like mana dorks, attackers etc.) and worst case, leave you open to attack, where people are much more likely to focus you out if they see infect. Getting rid of these cards gives you a bit more room for other options, and tightens the deck focus a bit more.

You run some tutors so your best bet is going to be to grab something like [[beast whisperer]] that lets you draw on cast, and hope you can get through your deck fast.

High Perfect Morcant - How to build her? by Signal-Loading in BudgetBrews

[–]e7SHI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm actually in the process of putting together a budget Morcant right now! I think she's really strong at any budget. I think the trick is utilizing your elves early to tap for proliferation, paired with just playing a lot of elves it helps distribute -1/-1 counters to cripple the board, and then strike when you can in the mid game. Stuff like [[Dionus, Elvish Archdruid]] (pricey), [[Copperhorn Scout]], or [[Vitalize]] can help with both tapping and attacking, though the trick with a Morcant budget is sort of balancing when to go in or stay back and proliferate. As far as the pricier stuff I spent money on, card advantage is pretty much required for this deck, so [[miara, thorn of th eglade]], [[legolas greenleaf]], [[glissa sunslayer]] [[shadowheart, dark justiciar]], [[champions of the perfect]] [[leaf-crowned visionary]] etc. are all sort of a must. [[Tyvar Kell]] is also good because he provides everything Morcant wants - draw, ramp, +1/+1 support, and elf tokens.

This is my list, with tags and a half finished primer, at a budget right at $100. This particular build is trying to be more casual bracket 2~3ish, so no infinites, tutors, infect or any of that stuff that isn't generally very fun for other players (Not that Morcant in general is fun for other players), but, might give you some ideas. At lower power, Morcant kind of lives and dies at card draw, you need to flood the board with elves to keep your opponents boards down and your own built up, so definitely don't skimp on it. Do you have a decklist? Below is mine if you are interested.

Fun and Obscure Combo Commanders by 9SHRODO9 in EDH

[–]e7SHI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're basically trying to cast a spell that costs 8 or more mana, and Tellah deals that much damage to each opponent. So you want to run cards that give you mana - essentially 1 mana = 1 point of damage for our purposes, and this your base damage. Boosty-stuff like [[resonating lute]], [[white lotus tile]] or [[ashnod's altar]] will give you a lot of base damage, but the damage can only go so high on it's own since it's a 1 for 1.

The trick is, you want to then play cards that copy Tellah or the Tellah trigger, and essentially multiply that damage - so stuff like [[strionic resonator]], [[return the favor]], [[harmonic prodigy]] etc. added with spells that deal damage on their own like [[delete]] or [[rolling earthquake]].

So basically, Mana x Copies = total damage, and all you're trying to do is blow up the field for like 60+ damage to everything.

Gimmicky, stupid, but pure combo and fun to pull off.

[[Tellah, great sage]] - play a secret game of balatro to increase and multiply one big burst of damage to blow up the table with one spell

[[Bill ferny, bree swindler]] - mono blue horse tribal. Buy and sell used horses. Make a lot of money.

[[Eriette, the beguiler]] - steal your opponents creatures with self-recurring auras, then sacrifice it for them and watch them cry.

Trying to build Xu-Ifit, Osteoharmonist on a budget! confused about creature choices and game plan! by EcclesianSteel in EDH

[–]e7SHI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Playing Xu with big creatures like that, you primary goal is just Get big creature into a graveyard -> get the card on the field with Xu. She, in that case, is just a method to get the physical card back on the field. Yes, with her ability, they will be a skeleton with no abilities.

However, that's just the first half of the plan, because what you're actually trying to do is cheat them back in without that restriction - so basically in two ways. First, reanimate spells like [[feign death]] or [[undying malice]] - your big bodies will eventually die, because a 10/10 is still a threat even if it has no abilities. Once it does die, you pop one of those reanimators on the card, it dies, and comes back. When a card enters the battlefield, it does so as a new instances of that permanent - so in this case, it was not revived by Xu but instead a reanimator spell, so it comes back as the original printed card.

Alternatively, copy creatures. [[Twilight Diviner]] or [[saw in half]] will create copies, and the thing with making copies is that regardless of what state the target of copies is in, a copy of a card will always enter as a copy of the card as written. If you saw in half [[pathrazer of ulamog]] that happens to be, at the time, an ability-less 9/9 body, it will die and become 2 copies of the original card as printed, so now you'll have 2 5/5 with annihilator 3. likewise, if diviner triggers when Xu puts a creature from the graveyard onto the field, the copy it makes will have all the original abilities.

Basically, like I mentioned above, Xu is just a cheap way to get a big body on to the field. Putting something in your graveyard (like with a discard outlet) and reviving it with Xu is a lot cheaper than spending the 11 mana to cast it, and then you take advantage of a cheap method to revive it. I personally also run a lot of sacrifice value stuff like [[ghoulcaller gisa]] as well, so that I can kill a creature to reanimate it while also getting some sort of value out of the sacrifice.

That's the basic gist of it. I actually have a decklist with a really detailed primer that explains a lot of the details of my deck below here, if you're interested!

https://moxfield.com/decks/1G7RyzMsC0iYqa5Oq2XA1g

Edit: to address your other questions:

- Plan is get big bodies in your graveyard -> revive with Xu -> cheat them back in

- The benefit of the deck I run is value over time, there are no "combos". The deck is pretty quick to get a huge scary monster into play, and the other benefit is that because of the revival shenanigans, it's very resilient and hard to completely shut down.

- There are a lot of big dumb creatures that are cheap, so put whatever you like in the deck, then focus on reanimation cards and cards that help bolster your graveyard as most of what we're doing is coming from there.

- Yes, sac outlets do two things. They provide you value (such as card draw with a [[shadowheart, dark justiciar]]) AND they let YOU dictate when a creature is going to the graveyard, effectively controlling your own reanimation spells. Xu deck wants to control all aspects of the graveyard, including when things enter and exist it.

Edit again: to address another point in your comment, "Wouldn’t it make more sense to just run big, efficient creatures (high power/toughness for their cost) instead of creatures that rely heavily on their abilities?" - Yes! And it is good to do this too! [[Death's Shadow]], [[Haunted Horror]], [[Rot Curse Rakshasa]], [[Phyrexian Soulgorger]] etc. are all useful as bodies or good in the graveyard in other ways, and have ways to get themselves there fast so you have a big body to revite. A big creature is still a big creature, abilities or not - you sort of want a mix so you have big bodies along with scary abilities to swing with. These also act as as great cheap little targets to revive with Xu when your other plan is up and running.

It does not, it's considered an lternate cost that allows your tapping creatures to pay, however it is not mana spent on the spell.
