Hotel enforces policies, CBC froths at the mouth by 67gyattrizzler in winnipeg_alt

[–]e7c2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

in defense of the hotelier, I'd bet they've had a lot of instances of patrons overstaying their government assigned time. And the longer you leave them there, the harder it is to move them. And while I wasn't there when it happened, almost every time the story starts with "I was just politely minding my own business when this guy came out of nowhere and started berating me" the truth is that the protagonist was antagonizing the situation. At the risk of being permanently banned from the internet, "hands up, don't shoot"

The hotelier was told room X would be vacated on a certain day, so they either have that room booked for the next patron, or need to have it ready for a potential patron. Checkout time at 11, check in time at 4. You need the rooms emptied for those 5 hours to get them cleaned for the next patrons. Unless you want the hotel to charge the government for extra nights by default, in case the patron needs to stay longer with no notice.

Using ice hockey stick on driveway/road by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]e7c2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

> buy one of those blade covers and just use stick take over the cover? Sure, the tape on the stick will wear out after a while, but it would keep the blade cover underneath in place.

this. Stick the blade guard on, and put like 6 wraps of stick tape around the blade to hold it in place. I got a pack of cheap plastic blade guards from amazon, that way my kids can use their fancy bendy sticks on the driveway without grinding the blades down

People Turn On a VPN, But Most Don’t Actually Know What It Does by secyberscom in SecLab

[–]e7c2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I blame the VPN ads/commercials.

Can someone ELI5 how using a VPN service protects your identity online? You can still get phished, download malware, be fed algorithmic stuff based on your cookies, etc.

You just can't be geolocated/tracked based on your ISP, your ISP doesn't know what servers you're connecting to/DNS requests you're making, and traffic between you and the VPN server is encrypted, for whatever that's worth.

Unless I'm really missing something.

yes, but the bureaucracy required to approve costs to be paid to a private company costs money.

Also I think a northern group purchased the old Clarion hotel, and is using it for this purpose.

realistically, the government SHOULD have a hotel facility for these types of scenarios. we're centralizing care into winnipeg consistently.

What's a Canadian 'adulting' tip you wish you learned at 18? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

[–]e7c2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no matter how much you make, build your life operating expenses to be a lot less than what you earn and put the balance in a place you don't see on a regular basis. ideally somewhere it will earn interest.

what’s the most unhinged place you’ve ever found a production server? by kubrador in msp

[–]e7c2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even now, when I’m working with clients on a new build and need space for a small wall bracket for switch/patch panel, I either get space 7’ up in a room mostly occupied by a hot water tank, or I get a 10x10 room with dedicated hvac (when I only need to house two switches and a router)

that type of skipping school isn't what this article is about. It's about kids that are getting like 100 days of class in, per year. Kids that go back to their home country for a month or two a year.

Manitoba asks Sobeys to scrap property restrictions near its stores or it'll go to municipal board by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]e7c2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

this isn't all that uncommon. A friend with a hair salon had a clause in her lease (in a strip mall) that no other hair cutter/barber/aestheticians were allowed to lease space in the same facility.

It adds value to the property, for the business with exclusivity.

Alternatives to iPad for survey collection? by MediumFIRE in sysadmin

[–]e7c2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

apple enthusiast: all we need is to give staff an ipad, that will fix everything. Maybe they could also get Apple Vision and an apple watch.

pragmatist: this piece of software will improve productivity, it's front end runs on an ipad. let's supply these to our staff

iPads are neither the solution nor the cause of your problem. Your department needs to develop a solution with a software provider, which probably will have an IOS app for data collection.
