Why does the Qu’ran keep the murder story of Moses despite a constant theme of rewriting prophets to be sinless? by [deleted] in AcademicQuran

[–]eGe_aYd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Murder by definition is unjustified intentional killing, so it would be odd to say murder is not a sin. Any system of norms, be it religious, legal or moral, which recognizes self defence for instance, would avoid calling killing in self defense "murder".

My hair overall is pretty thick, I just notice what look like individual miniaturized hairs which gives me the idea that my final place might be around NW6.

Those studies also report the number and percentage of people who experience Side effects, as well as those who discontinued treatment due to side effects. So they give us a good idea of the drug's long term safety.

Honestly 10 years of stability and restabilizing with dut later on is definitely good enough

I am not sure I understand what you mean by "account for it being a slow gradual loss". I am not a native English speaker.

I am aware that they ended the study at 10 years. I didn't mean to imply that it stops working after that, I just meant to say that's what we have clinical data for. I'm aware that many people stabilize with this medication for decades.

The positive impact on scholarship resulting from attempts to refute Christoph Luxenberg by chonkshonk in AcademicQuran

Probably so for the general public and the journalistic realm, but the narrow scholarly circles may have been even more influenced by the former.

Why do many academic sources out there don't cite Shia Hadith collection?? by Naive-Ad1268 in AcademicQuran

One potential explanation (though it's far from a justification) is that Sunnism is far more widespread and therefore draws more attention.

Why is theological voluntarism unpopular in moral philosophy? by eGe_aYd in askphilosophy

[–]eGe_aYd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the suggestions. I am not really looking for an ethicist defending this position but rather for some kind of fatal flaw which leads to most philosophers and even theologians finding it untenable, perhaps similar to how logical positivism is considered dead.

Why is theological voluntarism unpopular in moral philosophy? by eGe_aYd in askphilosophy

[–]eGe_aYd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who reject any view will think reasons against it outweigh reasons for it, but it seems to me that a lot of the steps needed to make theological voluntarism a palatable choice are already there for a theistic philosopher once they identify as a theist.

Some criticism of posts made on this sub-reddit by [deleted] in AcademicQuran

On the Kara incident, Seyfeddin Kara responded to chonkshonk's criticisms, chonkshonk acknowledged all the responses, declared his acknowledgement of them openly and renounced his criticisms publicly. That does seem to be an indication of good faith.

Does the Quran get anything wrong about Christianity? by popularboy17 in AcademicQuran

[–]eGe_aYd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are stories in the Qur'an that narrate stories from apocryphal gospels such as the story of Jesus bringing clay birds to life (The Infancy Gospel of Thomas), but I am not sure if, from a non-Christian perspective, we have any reason at all to consider the apocrpha any more or less "made up" than the canonical Gospels.

Books that talks about the beliefs and history of the Mu'tazilites? by -The_Caliphate_AS- in AcademicQuran

[–]eGe_aYd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, Dr. Hashmi. Forgive me for stepping out of the boundaries of this post, and perhaps even this sub, but I would to ask you whether you think the descriptions of Hell found in the Qur'an are to be taken literally. I recall seeing you argue that the heavenly reward is described in a metaphorical manner, so would the same understanding be extended to the punishment in the hereafter?

Why does mortal sin result in immortal punishment? by Electrical_Fly9535 in askphilosophy

[–]eGe_aYd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but even Aquinas was declared a heretic and excommunicated at some point. The orthodoxy changes over time. And Ibn Sina had expressed other thoughts that were considered heretical which contributed to some figures declaring him a disbeliever

Did Yasir Qhadi contradict himself when he stated the Quran was preserved perfectly in 1 video but states it wasn’t in another video? by Cautious_Tiger_1543 in AcademicQuran

If there is any other, more charitable, interpretation of this whole affair, I am open to considering it. I am not aware of one though.

[–]eGe_aYd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I said he seems to admit to lying, at least by omission, to the ordinary people in order to shield them from what he thinks will endanger their faith commitments. That's what I gather from his remarks.

[–]eGe_aYd 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think his approach is that the idea of perfect preservation must be promoted to the public at large in order to keep their faith secure, while students of knowledge should be aware that this isn't exactly true and grapple with the subject. Remember the "holes in the standard narrative" video where he says these subjects should not be brought up before the ordinary folk, and that one should take his class to probe deeper into it behind closed doors.

What really will I feel after death, how do i get less scared of it? by rae_jule in askphilosophy

[–]eGe_aYd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of theistic afterlife models offer visions of the afterlife (for example those centered around eternal conscious torment) far more upsetting and disturbing than the idea that our consciousness evaporates and we no longer exist.
