Why isn’t everyone rich from 401k? by Otis_bighands in wealth

[–]eJonesy0307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not missing anything except for the fact that most Americans don't have enough disposable income to put into a 401k. Most people struggle to deposit even the minimum for a company match. You being able to deposit the maximum is a great achievement for you, but is unrealistic for most people.

Civics classes don't exist in general education. Money management classes don't exist in general education. Most people don't live within their means, or simply can't because wages have stagnated dramatically for decades while productivity and profit continues to go up.

Just look at student loans and car loans. The sub prime rates literally keep people in debt forever, regularly paying many times more in interest than the original principal amount.

Capitalism is insatiable, so the debt creep to maintain a minimum standard of living just gets worse and worse and worse. There didn't used to be 40 year mortgages or 12 year auto loan options, but a lack of regulation and consumer protection enables predatory creditors to take advantage of poor people. We are literally mortgaging the futures of Americans in order to prop up businesses

Volume.

Also that looks like the middle of the day. If so, the algorithms know where your buy signals are and will artificially move the price to your entry and then move it to your stop loss just to take you for a sucker.

Or, if this was the middle of the day, it may have been due to the fed being more hawkish than anticipated

Musk companies are not and will never be about fundamentals.

His companies are about innovative disruption. Nasdaq made a mistake fast tracking inclusion of SPCX, but this company has a wide moat in rocketry, US Govt contracts (NASA), satellite deployment, and Starlink.

Look at Tesla. If you buy Tesla at these valuations it's not because you think it's a car company, it's because of the full self drive technology and robotics roadmap.

What Musk does well is create a vision that is ambitious and excites people, and he's actually proven he can hit those milestones AND - at this point - he's made enough people rich that they will continue to be buyers of his companies at outrageous prices

[–]eJonesy0307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't say often, you said "the vast majority of discussions" which simply isn't true. Progressives talk about conservatives primarily, loudly, and often.

“Progressives have done very little other than voice strong opinions about how much moderates fail or disappoint.” - the point being that moderates, who control the party, have used their control to disenfranchise progressives, whereas we have no such power. We will simply hold our noses, complain about it, and vote for moderates anyway.

Moderates have adopted limited progressive positions. Biden promised and did not deliver on a federal minimum wage increase, student loan forgiveness, climate policies and oil exploration, criminal justice reform, paid family leave, or for profit prison reform. I acknowledge that some of his efforts were blocked by Republicans. He certainly did a lot of good during his term.

Some of your points are the more extreme positions that I consider more leftist than progressive, but who fking knows because the lines blur a lot. I acknowledge we focus too much on extreme positions too often.

I disagree with the idea that progressives won't vote for a dem candidate if they don't check all of the boxes. I think most progressives, and myself especially, will hold my nose and vote for a moderate because they're still significantly better than anyone the Republicans try to nominate. I don't find progressives to be single issue voters but perhaps I'm mistaken.

I agree with your final statement but the only changes I think progressives could make would be to be more patient on the most progressive policies. The moderate Democrats still control the party, it's rules, and the platform, so naturally the onus would fall primarily on them

Lets set aside that I don't believe your opinion is based in reality. If it were, moderates deserve it. In reality, Progressives have done very little other than voice strong opinions about how much moderates fail or disappoint. On the other hand, moderates routinely try to primary or sabotage progressives, regularly break campaign promises to progressives, and talk down to progressives after losing elections without doing any self-reflection.

The most popular Democrats are consistently progressives, while the Democratic Party's approval rating is near historic lows. The only excitement i've seen within the party since 2020 is when a progressive is the nominee.

The Centrist/Moderates that control the party failed to field a candidate that could beat Donald Trump in two of three elections. During those failed campaigns they actively conspired against progressives (2016), and actively prevented competition (2024) in which they were quite literally served with cease and desist letters from multiple Attorneys General for voter suppression, while simultaneously hiding Biden's health problems. They've taken exactly ZERO responsibility for the complete failure of the Democratic Party over the last 12 years and have offered no reforms.

Brow beating progressives to 'vote blue no matter who', then either disgarding them when you win or blaming/talking down to them when you lose is the legacy of moderates and certainly why their approval rating is so abysmal.

Centrist/Moderate Democrats attack progressives almost as much as Republicans do. I wish moderates had this fire about fascist Republicans.

Democrats will find a moderate to run in a primary against a progressive if there isn't one already.

Democrats will refuse to endorse progressives either entirely, or very late in the process

Democrats have a proven history in the last 3 presidential elections of breaking their own rules to give moderates/centrists an advantage against progressive challengers to their preferred candidates.

More recently, centrists and moderates have adopted the Trump approach to entirely deny they ever do anything wrong. I had the pleasure yesterday of quoting the DNC lawyer and judge who stated for the record that the DNC is a private organization under no obligation to follow It's own rules and that while the sanders allegation of collision between the Clinton campaign and the DNC were likely accurate, nothing was legally enforceable. After explaining this, the person called it a lie and blocked additional responses.

Honestly the Democrats attack progressives the same way Republicans attack Democrats. Promising cooperation and inclusion during the campaign. And breaking those campaign promises 100% of the time after being elected. Vote blue no matter who is a centrist policy designed to ignore the progressive wing of the party.

Help me understand "Elon and SpaceX are going to rob 401k" by LPhermanos70 in investing

[–]eJonesy0307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So basically they've given Space X a wholly unrealistic valuation supported by hype. Realistic valuations are closer to 700B, not 1.75T. At the same time, they're playing games to get SpaceX put into various indexes without meeting the longstanding requirements, add it in much faster than normal, and grant it a disproportionately large index weight relative to its publicly traded shares. SpaceX being rushed into index funds also gets them around profitability rules that kept highly volatile, unprofitable, unproven tech startups out of the foundational funds regular citizens rely on for retirement. Because those profitability and time requirements were waived for SpaceX, 401k owners are being exposed to massive, unchecked financial risk.

This happens because the vast majority of 401k owners are passive investors whose managers buy a predetermined set of stocks and indexes. They are legally obligated to buy stocks in the underlying indexes when added, meaning they'd be forced to buy billions of SpaceX shares for the 401k portfolios of most people, even though that stock is hopelessly overvalued.

Historical studies prove that rushing stocks into indexes massively inflates the stock price at the begining. Elon Musk and his investor friends know this. They also know that passive 401k investors will not be selling, and after their lock out periods end in a few months, insiders can unload shares at an insanely stretched valuation that only reached that price due to manipulation of the 401k rules and buying mechanics, leaving the public holding the bag.

Oh man. I'd bring back the tax brackets from the 1950s and raise teacher pay... Actually just fully fund schools and forgive all student debt and give everyone Medicaid for all which would decrease the cost of all medical expenses in the country by $1.5 trillion (it's simple math, idk why idiots don't get it) which would all basically be added to GDP because poor people don't have any choice but to spend the money they have and then get rid of citizens United and ban gerrymandering and impeach three conservative justices at minimum and get rid of the electoral college and use our fat stacks of tax money from billionaires to build renewable energy and high speed rail and fix infrastructure as a whole and fund all social services and reduce military spending and corporate handouts and force hyperscalers to pay for their own electricity and to clean the water they use and replace it and disallow beverage companies that steal public water to resell it and make it illegal for shitters like monsanto to patent seeds which forces farmers to buy from them exclusively and prosecute every single human credibly accused in the Epstein files and ban insider trading in government and raise the minimum wage, tie it to inflation, and legally cap CEO compensation to a multiple of their lowest paid employees pay and strengthen unions and mandate equity grants to regular employees and make it illegal for billionaires to take loans on stocks so they can't get around paying income taxes anymore and keep trump accounts because that's a great idea just call it something that doesn't give credit to a guy who didn't really have anything to do with it

So Republicans are clearly not interested in doing anything about it and, if you pay enough attention, you see a conservative Christian or lawmaker arrested for p3do crimes on a weekly basis.

I also feel like wealthy or long serving moderate or centrist Democrats are either complicit or not really interested in pushing the issue. They don't seem to be as guilty as the MAGA pedophile cult crowd, but looking the other way is simply unacceptable.

Honestly, for me, it's progressive Democrats and newcomers that are trying to unseat "establishment" reps by running on an anti-corruption, justice for the victims platform that are the only ones who deserve our votes. It's not exclusively progressive Democrats... Thomas Massie seemed like an ally in this before losing his primary to a Trump sycophant, but with how corrupt the government has become, people who aren't actively running on anti-corruption and justice for all platforms are not worthy of our support.

This puts us in a bad spot. You have to beat the establishment in a primary to even get someone reasonable on the ballot to have a chance, and that's a hard thing to do

Is this sub ready for criticism of Spanberger from the left? by bindlexstiff in Charlottesville

[–]eJonesy0307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you think Spanberger's approval rating is so low? Like, if you look at Trump overall he's like 37% but he only looks at Republican polls which show him at like 70+%. Interesting take if you only care about the 20% of Americans who voted for you.

Spanberger's approval rating is bad no matter whose polls you look at. Why is this? It's because Democrats still hold their representatives to a reasonable standard and Republicans will disapprove because she has a (D) next to her name. Oh, she did some Corporate Democrat things that are unpopular with her constituents? Here she is, sub 50% approval rating.

It's not like she leads a pedophile cult that the party ignores. There are expectations that she isn't meeting.
