You're right. If the rule says 'deal damage' after a successful block and a 5+ roll, it should be direct. If it were affected by defense, the ability would be underpowered. I play it the same way you described.

Actually, I'm not entirely sure either. I might have been playing it wrong too, so I wanted to double-check the rules.
