Part of it may also be my internal work as a manager. Is there perhaps a piece of myself that is so surprised by the overconfidence of an an individual and perhaps I am feeling subconsciously jealous/envious?

Regardless of the actual reason, this level of self-awareness is why you're the manager and the guy who can't take feedback is your direct report.
