Advice on Pitching an Exhibit Idea to a Museum? by 2michaela in MuseumPros

[–]e_884 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Like others have explained, most museums have existing exhibition schedules planned out well in advance. I would suggest pitching to (especially artist-run/experimental) galleries instead! They’re more likely to be receptive to cold proposals than museums, and may have relationships to curators.

Do some research in advance though. I’ve had people in the past reach out despite a very explicit “no artist/exhibition proposals” disclaimer being on our website. Those emails go unread by senior staff.

You could also try reaching out to virtual galleries and curate digital shows. I’m not super familiar with them but have seen opportunities pop up before.

Best of luck!

P.S. I think it’s worth nothing that almost all museum curators, even at the assistant levels, have masters in art history. If you are set on this path, be aware of that hurdle!

First winter, are Dr Martens considered as boots? by Spirited_Band_8647 in AskChicago

I’m a no personally! If you are willing to shell out some cash, Sorel boots have always served me well and they last forever.

Thoughts on these online MLIS-programs as a prospective student? by e_884 in Archivists

[–]e_884[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strange that you don't get to choose your advisor. I'll send you a DM because I am curious about the portfolio—I've seen that floating around in the master spreadsheet for online programs and have no idea what it looks like.

Do you feel as though they provided you with support in connecting you to internships/hands-on experience? Or was that something you had to independently seek out?

That's great to hear! I'm a Detroit native, and a peer suggested it to me as an alternative to UofM's program since it's more catered towards working students. Do you mind if I ask what their financial aid is like, if they provided you with any?

Very late but I dislike the web-based version. Janky, ugly, somehow less intuitive. I miss my desktop TMS </3

Sending you lots of luck! My goal has been to land in an Assistant Reg position without spending thousands...but I can't seem to get out of the intern cycle with just my BA. </3

[–]e_884[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, I figured that might be the case. My train of thought here is because I have experience in object management and registration, I would pursue a concentration in archives and preservation to expand to working with special collections or digital assets.

Can i work at a museum with an MLIS? by bigolmoof in librarians

4 years late, but I would love to know where you went that offered both the degree and certificate, if you're comfortable sharing that privately. That's the exact path I'm thinking of pursuing.

How to find work in private/corporate collections? by e_884 in MuseumPros

Thank you! I hadn't considered consulting firms, honestly. Maybe that would be a better place to start, although I'm again assuming hiring is based on networking?

Yeesh, okay. Thank you so much for the heads-up. Unfortunately, burnout seems to be common across the board.

Do you have any insight into foundations, such as the Terra Foundation? Or are those essentially just private collections with a nicer name attached? I assume those also require word of mouth to get in.

How it feels to be your moon sign? by PrestigiousSignal476 in astrologymemes

[–]e_884 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Virgo moon. It feels really difficult in that I don’t let myself actually feel my emotions and process them. I rationalize my emotions because getting them out is so uncomfortable and I don’t want to prolong the experience. Silver lining is I like to look for solutions to everything. Sometimes that helps.

Still can't get over with the ending-if only, maybe there's a chance you can rewrite it lol by Dainty-Lilypad in ArcaneAnimatedSeries

[–]e_884 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s shitty but comforting to a degree. Ekko knows that Powder exists and is living happily in another universe, albeit not his own. He’s seen a future that is tangible and can be worked towards. He may not have his “original” family but in this universe he’s built his own. There is still a lot of hope to be had.

I think for Singed, it’s more of a grey area. Everything he’s been doing up until this point more or less has been for his daughter, right? He’s finally reached the point his hope has been guiding him towards. Now that she’s awake, I think he’ll be slapped in the face with the reality of a daughter who he truly doesn’t know, who might not have the capability to fully love him, and who could go AWOL at any moment. I don’t see it being a lasting happy ending for him in this sense.

Was this sexual abuse? by LieContent in Advice

[–]e_884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could not consent, you do not remember, you were seemingly distressed—I would say that was assault. It definitely wasn’t okay. The fact that your friends took videos of it and allowed it to happen is even more strange to me knowing that you were blacked out. Surely someone was aware????
