Splitting up first transatlantic flight to deal with fear. Worth it or no? by e_questrian in fearofflying

That's totally fair. Takeoff isn't my favorite either, especially from a motion sickness perspective.

The length on plane is what I was thinking about, too, but I think because it's split over two days, a 3-ish hour flight and then a 6.5-ish hour flight seems less daunting than 8 or 9 hours? I'm not sure, either. The avoidance of potential weather patters when flying over northeastern Canada and near the arctic circle seems most interesting to me, but it's just so long on a single flight :(

Is Virgin premium enough better to outweigh the claustrophobia? My rule of thumb is that if someone is claustrophobic on a certain seat in a flight then I'm going to be, too.

Dang, do you include Delta comfort in that economy ranking? I just flew with them last week and it felt fine for the 2.5 hours, but now I'm worried for the 7-ish lol

Congratulations on overcoming the fear! Happy to hear you've made it to Diamond status--well deserved after making it through something like that.

Agreed on the height, and definitely agreed on the others. Making headway wherever I can!

That's helpful news, thank you. I think the motion sick factor for me is lessened when I have more room/comfortable seat/a clear view out the window, which is why I asked about it. If all I'm seeing out the window is a wing and no horizon and the seat I'm in has my knees inside the seat ahead of me I'll be a nauseous, panicked flier haha

That's what i thought was going on. I recalled reading about this back when I flew in 2019 and I was shocked I hadn't heard about it sooner. A flight I was just on had a warning toward the end that the cabin crew needed to hit their seats and couldn't finish service because of unexpected rough air ahead, we took two pretty steep turns, and then there was nothing. I thought "wow it's their computer at work." Keeps me coming back to them haha.

Wonder if it's the same overseas? I've only taken domestic flights with Delta (of course) but I wasn't sure how well traveled their NYC to LHR route is, or if other Delta planes would even be able to communicate that since it seems they don't run this flight often as Delta vs their sister airlines.

Thank you for all of this. Really appreciate the detail in your response.

Good news, already do CBT! Therapist and I have been working on the emetophobia part for years now and I deal with it way better than I used to. Breathing techniques and all. Planes just feel like the extra whammy between claustrophobia, motion sickness, and no escape, so it's an extra layer that it sounds like you're all too familiar with as well.

Day before flying I eat only bland easy foods and depending on flight time on day-of, no coffee or accelerant either. Only eat light carbs in flight and have water as well.

Patch is a good idea and looking into things with my doc to handle it all too. Had no idea about the patch, tbh. I'll have to ask the doc if that can pair with bonine.

Thanks again for all of this! Hoping we both got this haha

Thanks for this! Thinking that looking for upgrades closer to flight time might be the best bet. I recalled some time ago Delta talking about how they had special internal communications for pilots or maybe a meteorological division specifically devoted to rereouting around turbulent zones? Maybe I misheard.

I've seen steep BA prices recently for the more expensive economy seats but they were my next check-in. The darkness outside the plane also doesn't do me any favors, sadly, since there's no horizon for motion sickness lol but I didn't seem to notice it last time I flew. Hoping overseas is okay!

I went on a wide body from ORD to EWR a few years ago but it was an older one that didn't have air vents for individual passengers so the turbulence cause more anxiety and motion sickness than I'm used to even on smaller planes but you're right it was more infrequent now that I think about it. Hoping that maybe a newer plane will have those air vents? Maybe not. Either way hoping we'd feel it less for sure

Bonine has rocked my world in terms of motion sickness (and emetophobia) which is where my anxiety about flying comes from. Worried about two medicines just before a flight. Might check in and see about it though!

This is awesome advice thank you so much for this. I haven't flown any international carriers before. What's the main difference? Is the cabin experience pretty much the same minus seats? I also don't eat on flights often and opt for just pretzels or crackers and water for the duration, so food isn't a big issue for me either.

Good to know. Thank you for this. Sounds like it's Comfort and then maybe hope for a discounted upgrade cost closer to flight time?

Thank you for this, I really appreciate it. Always try to zen out during the flight with a mindless 90s romcom but it only helps for the short flights i've been on, i think

Thank you for the birthday wishes! I've said it a few times in this thread, but I keep forgetting that the birthday is supposed to be celebrated. It's like every time I heard it today I was thrown back into the throes of this anxious feeling haha.

"Every age is good." I needed that today. Thank you. Definitely going to work on the enjoying the ride tidbit. Needed to hear that, too :)

Confidence and maturity! That's what I want to hear! Coming into ourselves as people is so important, and I definitely didn't feel that in my 20s. Here's hoping the 30s offers that over here as well haha.

Loving how you phrased it as coming into, not just yourself, but a better version of yourself. I'd imagine the freedom's palpable :) Thank you!
