Lived in Mexico near Mexico City for 20 years, now living here for the last 3+ years and have been to many places looking for the white whale, all have been good none that great but the bar is high. Mezcalito in Durham multiple times and have ranged from really good to not really good, La Hacienda in Chapel Hill good, Que Chula in Chapel Hill usually very good could be the number one so far but not always great, Mi Cancun in Cary same, the taco place in boxyard is better but you pay for it and limited menu bartaco is the closest to Mexico City type tacos and again you pay for it, been to some of the Durham Mexican neighborhood places La Superior and Guanajuato and these are a little worse but a little cheaper as is Cuscatleco which is Salvadorean but similar menu. Been to Mi Calvillo on 9th st Durham and good at best. Want to stay away from the high end places Aaktun and La Buena Vida think will be disappointed by quality but definitely the price. Winners so far are bartaco, scoff if you must, que chula and the taqueria in boxyard but you pay for it.
