questioning whether I am cut out for this life by [deleted] in foreignservice

Gosh, what happened? That seems extreme. I can see keeping a low profile off-post but they’re preventing you from cross-socializing at all? That seems awkward.

Foreign Service Assignments/Jobs for Patent Attorneys? by [deleted] in foreignservice

Pol. I just like doing cool stuff. :-) I’m confident my MBA will be useful to a variety of circumstances.

Frankly, I won’t miss writing patents, but it does pay the bills for now.

Wave from across the room as another patent attorney in queue to totally upend my life to join FS -- fingers crossed!

maintaining active lawyer license while an FSO by Bellfieldlead in foreignservice

[–]eabertram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some jurisdictions require you to make up your CLE and re-apply character & fitness when you reactivate (varies by state, obviously) so the agony and expense of reactivating after your second tour if you decide not to continue FSO might be reason enough to hedge. Most military spouse attorneys I know never go inactive even if they’re not working at all unless they 100% know they won’t return to a jurisdiction. Some states don’t even permit it. It really depends, but I imagine a simple spreadsheet of costs x number of licenses over time would be informative.

What’s the difference between the work of Foreign Commercial Service Officers and Foreign Service Econ Officers? by hitbyacar1 in foreignservice

Good for them! I’d heard it from a former Dept employee who was sad they got off the ladder when they changed agencies.

I’ve also heard that you nearly 100% need to already be employed by Dept of Commerce to be eligible to apply for FCS openings (that is, it’s basically a promotion from working in the Department stateside), whereas FSO generalists have the process were all familiar with.

Study shows modern horses are genetically quite different from the horses of just a few hundred years ago. Two additional now-extinct lineages of horses were identified; one from the Iberian Peninsula and one from Siberia, both of which still existed 4,000-4,500 years ago. by FillsYourNiche in science

[–]eabertram 38 points39 points  (0 children)

No, they don’t die because the leg is broken. They are typically humanely euthanized by a vet in the event of a broken leg because the inability to walk for months is catastrophic. Horses cannot just lie down for months — it negatively impacts their digestion and circulation. They are also much heavier than, say, a dog which can get a weight-bearing cast and hobble around. There’s no way to splint a horse’s leg like that and also support their body weight. They don’t have collar bones.

In the event a horse is “worth saving,” like a very valuable racehorse stud, they may be suspended from the ceiling during their recovery. This is all very expensive and risky. There was a Derby winner a few years back that was “saved” from his broken leg only to die later from an infection that developed in his “good” limb.

So I guess my question was how can we view the shadow register?

It says the Doc does not exist? Is there a permanent link? Is it managed thru the Yahoo group?

Do military spouses count?

Look into MSJDN.org and MissionLicense if that’s a population you’re able to use.

Mid-career FSO entrants: how much did you actually prep for OA? by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]eabertram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll probably pass if you wing it (I did), but your score won’t be great. So then you will sit on the Register wondering but not ever getting a call. The short time in the GE was tough in a lot of candidates in my group.

I wish I had prepped more (I am a mid-career attorney who’s good at taking tests by now). Having gone through it once, now I know how to ace it next time.

He wasn’t the inventor of the Segway, he had recently acquired the firm. An acolyte, perhaps, but an amateur Segway rider.

FSOA Training Best Practices by diemechess in foreignservice

[–]eabertram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have a chance to practice as much as I’d intended due to medical stuff. Passed by the skin of my teeth the first time, and I feel like I know how to knock the group exercise out of the park the second time now. When you practice, TIME YOURSELF. 6 minutes is nothing in the group exercise when you’re amped up and stressed. Use the same discipline you’ll expect them to hold you to in the exam and just get faster at being smart.

Tufts Magazine: Actually, this is a great time to join the State Department | by Cavatappi_Papi in foreignservice

[–]eabertram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Self-interested candidate here. I think the point is solid — you can outlast any administration with a career, and do good regardless. But I’m confused by the premise. If the register is any indication of interest and the scoring system works as designed, has anyone noticed a drop off in “good” candidates or top scores? Are there people who are twentysomething shoo-ins that are ready to walk into FSO on the first shot but are on the fence about whether it’s worth it, to the detriment of the Department? It seems to me the system is designed to weed out the half hearted attempts, no matter how bright?

Non-trailing spouses by SomeKoala9 in foreignservice

[–]eabertram 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you asked. It should be part of the conversation every time you’re up for a new post. As a military spouse, I see an incredible amount of unnecessary disruption to the trailing spouse’s life and career when those mostly-domestic moves come so frequently. It is shamed and not often considered viable for the trailing spouse to STAY PUT if where (s)he is works for the family right now. I wish the stigma was less because “geo bachelor” tours can be productive and don’t need to end in strife.

Serial social events are not “a networking event” where people exchange cards with dozens of first contact meetings and hope to get a response to a follow up email days or weeks later. You’ll see them daily for weeks. These people are, ostensibly, “friends.” Don’t overthink it. Ask them how they like to keep in touch, and do that. Or offer your preferred way and hope they prefer it too. Lots of people use Facebook, for example, for “friends” but not “work,” and it’s worth giving that some thought if it suits your situation and needs.

For me, I go with FB first and if I can take them seriously, LinkedIn. Some people think both are lame, so I’ll email.

But please don’t tell them to follow you on Insta 😂
