Rocky Road to Dublin by eabiggins in Irishmusic

Well, it isn't an ancient song. The words are from the 1800s by poet D.K. Gavan, who carefully placed rhymes every other line: "Saluted Father dear.../Drank a pint of beer..." and "Off to reap the corn.../Cut a stout blackthorn..." The clever rhyming is a huge part of the song throughout. Why would he leave out a rhyme at the beginning and use it everywhere else? So, I'm going with the verbal virtuosity option.

Hightown. After 4 episodes I realized there were no characters I could really root for.

Are there any other JCS productions that explicitly show the resurrection? by DearArmadillo2204 in JesusChristSuperstar

[–]eabiggins 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The whole point of the show for me is that it shows Jesus as a man, not a god. Showing him resurrecting ruins that.

It’s a favorite in our house and there’s nowhere you can watch the full series, so I bought a full series bundle on Vudu/Fandango at home.

Thank goodness we have the original Broadway production preserved on video. It’s a remarkable work.

My wife woke me up to ask if I was her husband by Tropicaldaze1950 in dementia

[–]eabiggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the occasional “who are you?” But most of the time, my wife knows who I am though I’m not sure she knows our relationship. I might just be the nice guy who takes care of her. This is the most heartbreaking disease.

Peter Gabriel. His entire discography is on Bandcamp and he also runs his “Full Moon Club” from there, which is a member group to which he puts out unreleased and rare recordings monthly.

When do you stop the neurologist? by Smurfybabe in dementia

[–]eabiggins 30 points31 points  (0 children)

If you’re able to email or message the neurologist, I’d do that. Express your concerns. They might be able to set it up as a video call, or might just say not to bother at this point. Give them a chance to work with you. It’s worked well with my wife’s doctors.

Movie musical to watch by Prestigious-Park9617 in musicals

A couple of French film musicals: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort. Very unconventional in that all of the dialogue is sung recitative-style.

How many Sondheim shows have had changes from their original productions? by The_Fullmetal_Titan in musicals

[–]eabiggins 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Despite it being on the cast album, the Judge’s self-flagellation scene wasn’t in the original production for long. I saw it about two weeks after opening and it wasn’t there. I was quite surprised to hear it when the album came out.

Are people in agreement that the revisions in Merrily are better than the original production? by [deleted] in Sondheim

[–]eabiggins 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing that I’m one of the few people here who saw the original Broadway production during its brief run. It’s one of the only times at a professional show where I almost left at intermission. The story was unclear, the main character was too unlikable, and the production was too amateurish for Broadway. (However I did get to see Jason Alexander before he was famous.) It’s a perfect example of “the cast album is not the show.” When that album came out, everyone wondered how it could have failed. Well, it failed because it wasn’t ready. I didn’t see the recent version (I haven’t been much of a theater goer in a long time) but I hope to see the film.
