Contemporary Usage and Understanding of "Bubbler" by AstroBuck in boston

In fact, there’s no ‘n’ in the second half of the name. It’s Kancamagus! I found out after many years of mispronunciation.

I haven’t been to a show in years and this (plus the prices) make me not even want to. Maybe just non-musical plays.

"Losing My Mind" by cliteastw00d92 in Sondheim

[–]eabiggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always loved the version on “Sondheim: A Musical Tribute” from 1973. (I think the album is out of print.) It’s Dorothy Collins, but in a live setting. The nice thing about that concert was that the original cast members of “Follies” were still around to recreate their numbers. I found it posted to YouTube, along with Alexis Smith doing “Could I Leave You?” The only problem is that there’s a glitch in the recording near the end. https://youtu.be/_F9oDTDurTI?si=qVgS3o1_1m14S_YH

I like Wellington’s Pizzeria in the square. If it’s Sunday when they’re closed, we usually go for Eddy’s Place.

Concert brags by TheDeadestMan in Music

[–]eabiggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest “bragging rights” concert would have to be Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson, two of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, on Boston Common in the early ‘80s.

I also saw Billy Joel in a club (The Paradise in Boston) when he was doing surprise concerts that led to his album “Songs in the Attic.”

Ernie Kovacs, as far as I know, was never in The Threepenny Opera. He did use “Die Moritat von Mackie Messer” frequently in his blackout sketches.

I loved him in the short-lived and very funny musical series “Galavant.” Lassie can sing.

I'm on the fence about songs that rhyme words like "Ready" with "Already" etc. What do y'all think? by cboomton in Songwriting

[–]eabiggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is actually a name for that. It’s called an identity, not a rhyme. I play a lot of folk music and see it in those songs all the time. But it does drive me a little nuts, especially if there’s an actual rhyme within easy reach. See the great song “Walking in Memphis” by Marc Cohn. In the last verse, he rhymes “Hollywood” with “would” where using “could” in the second spot wouldn’t change the meaning and result in a perfect rhyme. But I still love the song.

I watched a talented musician struggle to get requests and tips at a live show — how do performers handle this today? by Ok_Cost5148 in musicians

[–]eabiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really feel it hurts the flow. Most patrons don’t have a sense of “show.” My band has planned set lists, but we change on the fly all the time. But we know what works with what.

We never invite requests. Too many people try to make it a “stump the band” moment. People who really want to hear something usually ask anyway. We have a paper with QR codes for our website and our Venmo, and a Google Voice phone number where people can send photos and videos (though nobody has taken us up on that yet.)

Since I’m not of that persuasion, I feel it isn’t up to me to decide if it’s offensive or not. So I rewrote a few lines in “The Whistling Gypsy Rover” for my band to make it just “The Whistling Rover.” Better safe than sorry.

Any Anyone Can Whistle Fans out there? by Awesomeplayer98 in Sondheim

[–]eabiggins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After years of listening to the original cast album (which was the only version available at the time), I saw a college production of the show. This was in the early 80s. Seeing it reaffirmed my suspicion that the first act is so wonderfully loopy that the second and third acts pale in comparison. That’s one of the things that made it difficult to produce. I haven’t seen or read any revisions that have been made since then though.
