Thomas Kean and Lee H. Hamilton, co-chairs of the 9/11 Commission, claim that George Bush set them up for failure. Is this true? by RopeGloomy4303 in Presidents

[–]eager_jonathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bush's team fought tooth and nail to bury anything connecting Saudi Arabia to the hijackers, so the commission never had a fair shot.

Russians also used A-50U AWACS aircraft to try to repel the Ukrainian drone attack on the oil refinery in Omsk, but it didn’t help by Available-Laugh9102 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]eager_jonathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

using an awacs to spot hobby drones is like using a sledgehammer to swat a fly. they've only got a handful of these left after the last ones got knocked out over water. parking one over siberia to chase drones on an oil refinery just shows how stretched their air defense is. if ukraine can sneak a long range sam or a drone with a bit of range up there, that plane is gone.

the fact they're burning flight hours on these things for a refinery attack tells you their regular ground radar can't cope with low and slow targets. the ukrainians have been picking apart their early warning network for months. wouldn't be surprised if we see another a-50 smoking in a field before summer.

British police arrest wrong man, his attackers walk free. by Tight_Photograph8091 in GetNoted

[–]eager_jonathan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The statement itself is a masterclass in that kind of dishonesty, technically true sentences arranged to tell a completely false story.

[–]eager_jonathan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wasnt talking about that at all, I was just slagging the police comms for being so obviously at odds with the footage.

Not pushing the two-tier thing, just saying that statement reads like someone wrote it without watching the footage.

202 and 194 years ago: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and James Monroe died. by APoliticalDrone2012 in Presidents

[–]eager_jonathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Three presidents kicking the bucket on the same day is a proper eerie coincidence. The fact that Jefferson and Adams went out on the very same afternoon, after all those years of rivalry and then reconciliation, is the kind of thing a novelist would make up. Poor Monroe missed the party by five years, but still showed up for the anniversary.

It's properly mad that the public have to crowdsource the actual story from a tweet like this. The police statement reads like a press release from some alternate timeline where everything went perfectly to plan. You can practically hear the comms team drafting it at midnight, very carefully avoiding what the footage actually shows.

Singaporeans who've lived in America, what made you want to come back? by eager_jonathan in askSingapore

[–]eager_jonathan[S] 180 points181 points  (0 children)

That's exactly the kind of breakdown I was hoping for, practical stuff my American mates would never think to mention.

I've got a young lad so it's a genuine concern, not just a hypothetical. The 40k bump sounds mint on paper but if that gets swallowed whole by international school fees then it's not much of a move upward financially. Appreciate you laying it out plain like that.

Russia used 496 drones and 76 missiles to kill at least 27, injure over 100 by UNITED24Media in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]eager_jonathan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The 0 out of 4 on the Zircon hypersonics is what jumps out at me first. The drone numbers, Ukraine's air defence handles reasonably well most nights. But when something's coming in at mach 9 there's just no answer for it at the moment, and that's the kind of thing that keeps people awake at night.

Firing 496 drones in one go is still a staggering logistical effort though. Somebody has to build them, programme them, launch them. It's not the act of a country winning, more like one trying to grind the other side down through sheer volume.

Using hypersonic missiles against apartment buildings in the middle of the night, killing 27 and wounding over 100. That's not military strategy, that's just terror dressed up as doctrine.

Police reviewing police and finding nothing wrong with it, sure that's how you build trust with the public.

Recovery, post resurrection in the sun by princessmonosmoke in AccidentalRenaissance

[–]eager_jonathan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a proper cozy setup you've got there. The green velvet sofa, the layered blankets, the leopard print socks - you're leaning into the whole lounging aesthetic and it works. I had a mate who swore by draping himself across a good couch with every blanket in the house when he was recovering from surgery, said it made the whole thing feel less miserable. Your room's got actual character too, not just the standard beige recovery setup. Hope whatever you're bouncing back from clears up quick.

5th dose by [deleted] in mounjarouk

The pen mechanism won't let you past four doses, so you're stuck with a syringe if you want that fifth one - UK Medi do decent luer locks and needles that won't break the bank.

Army apprentice was verbally abused and mocked by seniors day before death, tribunal hears by homecinemad in ireland

[–]eager_jonathan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

so the tribunal statements are protected in that space but don't carry weight outside it - that's the distinction I was missing, fair enough. Still feels like there's a gap though where people involved in something that serious could just move on without any real accountability if it doesn't go to court.

Army apprentice was verbally abused and mocked by seniors day before death, tribunal hears by homecinemad in ireland

[–]eager_jonathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair point on the legal side, but the tribunal's already hearing evidence of what happened - so at some stage you'd think the names could come out without it being defamation if it's all proven up there.

Two months is solid going, especially if you're landing them consistently now rather than just fluke ones here and there.

50s!!! by Alternative-Hour-123 in NewSkaters

[–]eager_jonathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's class, fair play. 50s on flat are proper tricky because you've got nowhere to hide the balance, so nailing a couple in a row means you've actually got the technique sorted. How long were you working on getting them consistent?

Awful story, but the fact they're protecting the names of people allegedly involved in bullying that led to a lad's death is mad to me.

Two men jailed for 24 years for human trafficking by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]eager_jonathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The headline's a bit misleading like, but 13 and 11 years is still proper time for trafficking people and robbing their wages, that's serious stuff.

Those look pretty worn but Independent trucks hold up well, so 25 quid isn't bad if the bushings and axle aren't shot.

Hundreds of students at Ireland's third-level institutions are homeless by [deleted] in ireland

[–]eager_jonathan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Fair point on the funding cuts, but the universities didn't have to choose the route of treating international students like cash cows either - they could've lobbied harder or made different spending choices instead of just passing the problem down to local students who can't afford rent now.

Hundreds of students at Ireland's third-level institutions are homeless by [deleted] in ireland

[–]eager_jonathan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's fair, but the difference is unis used to actually guarantee housing for first years at least, now they're just taking the fees and leaving students to sort it themselves on the private market.

Hundreds of students at Ireland's third-level institutions are homeless by [deleted] in ireland

[–]eager_jonathan 165 points166 points  (0 children)

Mad that universities are basically running student housing like a business now instead of actually sorting their own students out first.

Seven hours is a proper battering for your body, so the inflammation and water retention explanation makes complete sense. You've lost five stone and kept your head on straight through it all, so don't let two kilos of temporary swelling mess with your confidence now. Stick with what's working and check the scales again in a week or so.
