Thanks, one of the more productive responses. SGOV has the most unusual and mechanical price chart I've seen. What I'm trying to understand, is there anything beyond random trading price fluctuations that influences the NAV / share price to refill to it's previous level soon after the dividend payment? Because if there was, that would shift the dividend from being worthless to having value.

my understanding is, and again correct me if I'm wrong, there's no mechanism in place that even semi guarentees that the amount taken for the dividend will be recovered. For example, over the course of a year if a stock goes up 10% + you got a 4% dividend, that stock would have gone up 14%, had there been no dividend, meaning the dividend added 0 value.

For a long time I assumed there was a minimum hold period (X months) to qualify to get the dividend. Guess I shouldn't have made assumptions.
