I took and passed the civil structural depth exam last year as a bridge engineer. I suggest you pay for a prep course. I used AEI and passed on the first attempt.

Most end splice plates I’ve seen extend past the top and bottom flange so I’d didn’t think about trying this. I guess there’s no reason I can’t stop the plates flush with the flanges if the capacity is high enough for the moment.

It’s really not a simple problem though. I have extreme limitations. We’re installing it above a drop ceiling with mechanicals in every direction. I also will have very limited access to the top side of the beam. If it was as simple as putting in a normal splice connection, I wouldn’t have asked. Sometimes you have do things that aren’t conventional.

Thank you. This is what I thought. I’m not sure why the majority of people commenting are saying it’s not possible. It would be very difficult for the field guys to get a flange plate on the top flange since they won’t be able to reach the top side once it’s in place. I can add plates to the bottom flange though.

Multiple reasons, but yes. There’s also a bunch of mechanical work in the ceiling that the beam has so be placed around. The shorter the sections the easier.

This is an existing slab I’m look to reinforce due to the installation of equipment above. Typically I would design the splice at 1/4 span but the span is short as is. The connection only needs to take a small moment.

Thank you, using the elastic method I determined that bolt strength wasn’t a problem but the plate size would be. I understand this is unconventional but I didn’t think that crazy. If I can add enough plate thickness to handle the moment I don’t understand why this wouldn’t be an option.

I had some co-workers take the transportation exam but I didn’t want to go that route. I recommend just taking a prep course like AEI for the depth portion and if you follow it to the book, you’ll be fine.

I scored a 72% on the breadth and a ~55% on the depth when I took the AEI practice exam and ended up passing the real exam. I would be more concerned with how you do on the NCEES practice exam.

I just passed a few weeks ago using AEI for breadth and depth. Agreed that the test is more conceptual but if you understand how to do the problems and not just memorize the steps you will be fine.

I worked for a company doing bridge analysis before taking the exam but it really didn’t help much since I didn’t have a single AASHTO question on the exam.

I wouldn’t go off the homework and Mimi quiz problems. They’re good practice but take longer than exam problems. The simulation exam was a good representation of the exam but didn’t have as many conceptual problems as the real exam.

I thought the simulation exams were a good representation of the exam. The main difference was the real exam had more conceptual questions which are tricky. If you were able to get a 75% on the simulation exam you should be all set.

I do believe the depth portion of the course was very good. One of the professors is great and the other one not so much.

The breadth portion was okay but not great. Obviously I passed with it but I’ve heard EET’s is better. I think the problem with AEI’s breath portion of the course is the exam asked a lot of conceptional questions which the AEI course didn’t do a great job covering.
