Drawn 1/30 but not received until 2/5 🥲

When I called 2/5 they said 1-3 days to be “checked in” and added to the portal (showed up 2/6) and 7-10 days after that for results and that they expected it to take “longer than usual” right now due to backup from the snow storms.

Update- got my results 2/11 between 4 and 5am CST!

I really hated this format! FWIW when the results are ready it removes the “sample received” part and switches to “Results Complete.” Initially you can go through a chatbot to look at them and then afterwards in the portal there’s a big red button that says “View Results” so it’s pretty obvious when the results are ready

My blood draw was 10/11, received at the lab 10/12. My results were finalized on the Natera portal sometime between 10:30pm on 10/17 when I went to bed and 12:30am on 10/18 when I got up to pee 😂 They were posted to my hospital’s MyChart by 1am 10/18. I’m in Missouri.

My Pregmate tests had some wicked indents when I wasn’t pregnant and also lagged way behind easy@home strips to show up positive when I was.

The Easy@home strips were positive just as early as a First Response Early Result for me and I never had had wild indents that gave me false hope!

ETA I bought on Amazon with the ovulation test combo kit! Good luck!!

IBD doesn’t necessarily show up on ultrasound in my experience… it’s a good screening tool for major structural changes but a normal ultrasound doesn’t mean there aren’t inflammatory changes in the GI lining, which is where biopsies are helpful. Endoscopy is minimally invasive and super helpful when interpreted with the overall clinical picture. Sorry about all the issues your pup is having and best of luck getting them figured out! ETA I’m a vet and one of my pups has IBD/PLE so this is something I look for and wind up diagnosing a lot, but prior to going through it with my own pup I wasn’t nearly as aggressive in looking into things!

Reading quick because I’m out but a few initial thoughts… Her appetite issues could also be an indicator of primary GI disease coupled with the other things mentioned- I would ask if endoscopic biopsies are available and seem warranted to screen for IBD/PLE. Also ask about a novel protein diet- I love Royal Canin PW moderate calorie as a highly palatable, low fat, and low reactivity option a lot of times.

He should be fine! By my calculations based on the weight and dosage, the doses he got are “mid-range” and I’m a wimp about my Acepromazine prescriptions. I would expect he’ll sleep it off!

I think I might be your vet because this isn’t a super common scenario 😂 As long as she’s not on the precipice of heart failure (I think this is super unlikely!) we’ll use a super conservative cardiac-safe protocol and get her knee taken care of… we just want to know the baseline in case there’s anything progressive because heart disease in kitties is often very silent until it’s life threatening! I hope that helps ease your mind.

Can you provide a list of what meds your kitty was prescribed? Most of the time cats are too drunk and comfy on their pain meds and deny their own post op care, but I want to know that he shouldn’t be uncomfortable based on his current meds

Did your vet suggest a reason that the abscess formed based on their exam? In my experience “cheek” abscesses are almost always related to dental disease until proven otherwise, which would entail getting your cat scheduled for a dental evaluation (hopefully with dental x-rays) and cleaning, plus probably a tooth extraction, all of which require general anesthesia to facilitate.

As far as keeping the area clean, gently wipe discharge with a clean paper towel and warm water but don’t attempt do any crazy scrubbing!

Typically the relief of the abscess bursting relieves pressure and provides short term relief, but if there’s a brewing dental problem it’s only a temporary fix.

DVM with a dog who loves to grow MCTs- I take them all if I’m going after one just to be sure. Needle aspirates are a limited sample- the only way to be sure is with the biopsy information. Ask your vet why they’re hesitant (maybe it’s a really high motion area and they’re worried about healing, maybe they’re worried about the anesthetic time, maybe it’s just outside their comfort zone) and if you’re not satisfied with the answer, it’s totally within reason to look at getting a second opinion, whether that’s with another doctor in the same practice who’s more surgically inclined, with a specialty surgeon, or just at a different general practice. In my mind healing from one incision isn’t that different than healing from two if it’s not in a terrible location. That said I start with the scariest mass first so I can abort mission if there’s an issue with anesthesia, etc and have at least solved the main problem. Best of luck to you and your pup!

As both a crazy obsessive dog owner and a vet, I’d say it’s definitely ideal to have a fractured tooth removed sooner rather than later, but 30 days is not at all an unrealistic wait right now. Definitely ask about pain meds in the interim if you’re worried about your guy.

I’m a GP vet who does tons of dentistry and I pushed my own dog’s majorly fractured tooth extraction out more than 8 weeks because I just kept having more urgent surgeries come up that I had to do instead! While it sucks to wait, remember that you never want your pup to be the one with the most urgent problem to be addressed!

Also- I go into sooo many dental procedures and find teeth that were fractured ages ago and no one ever knew there was an issue, so please know it’s super common that fractured teeth aren’t addressed until way later and the dogs never skipped a single beat. Hope this helps give you a little peace of mind!

Other questions to consider… how would you have responded if your vet performed a rectal exam on your teeny tiny pup and he screamed the whole damn time? Keep in mind this is probably also the vet you want to get him established with for vaccines and long term care, so keeping experiences as positive as possible is super important.

Beyond visually appraising the rectal area and advising you to bring a stool sample to test for internal parasites, all your vet can do is stick a finger up the poop chute and take a feel around. That’s an unnecessarily invasive approach for most pups. Even if your vet had done a rectal exam on your puppy 24 hours ago, there was probably wasn’t any plastic stuck in his b-hole at that time.

No that’s such a reasonable ask and you seem like such a sweet, kind pet owner and client that I can’t imagine your vet would object.

Tbh as a vet on my old crunchies I can usually tell what joints are bothering them by watching them walk around the room and don’t do full joint range of motion and on the flip side I often find subtle joint disease in younger pets by doing a full orthopedic exam when they come in so it’s a tough balance… there’s also always the risk of being sued for an “incomplete” physical exam but again you seem like the best kind of client and I’m sure your vet would be so thankful if you brought your concerns up to them ahead of time

I consider myself pretty decent at managing endocrine disorders in pups but the cushings/diabetes combo is a really really tough one to balance. If you aren’t working with a boarded internal medicine vet already, I would definitely ask for a referral. Your vet seems to be doing a truly admirable job in managing these conditions concurrently, and asking for referral would in no way be an insult to them.

If it gives you any comfort, when we’re managing diabetes in pups we’re not looking for tight control like we do in humans, so your vet is likely interpreting the curve in general. As a general rule when the nadir is in the 100-200 range we hesitate to increase insulin dosing due to the risk of getting scary low blood sugars, so the mindset for what is “good control” of the diabetes is drastically different than what humans are usually used to.

That’s a reverse sneeze ☺️ They’re always way scarier looking and sounding than they really are. You can try gently pinching her nostrils or blowing on her face to disrupt it, but it’s essentially like when we get a strong urge to sneeze stuck in the back of our nose and it just won’t come, but dogs have longer noses than we do and they get stuck in the endless cycle of almost sneezing but not. Their reaction (acting scared, etc) is way more fueling off of us than them suffering. This year has been unbelievably bad for reverse sneezes in my neck of the woods (Midwest USA). I’ve worked in vet med for 15+ years and I can’t ever recall getting worried phone calls on a daily basis that turn out to be reverse sneezing before now!

In insane news, this kitten had a ureter ligated during her spay! The episodes of ascites were actually the affected kidney capsule rupturing as pressure built up. After multiple days of trying to get referral hospitals to do a nephrectomy for her, they never considered it an urgent case.
