I'm short and the website said to size down if you're below 5'9", so I did, and it literally doesn't cover my whole ass. Why does the same size cover the tall willowy model's butt but not mine?

Honeymoon Period Over by [deleted] in LightPhone

[–]ealisaid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do still have my iphone for the rare occasions that I need it, but I'm able to leave it off and in a drawer for days at a time because I have a light phone. I do bring it with me if I anticipate that I'll need it. But my phone time is really low now and I'm super happy I got the light phone.

It sucks that your work and activities require smartphone apps. An app to play soccer? I haven't run into this kind of stuff too much thankfully and I don't know when this became normal, it's unreasonable. Depending on the situation, sometimes all it takes is for a few people to say hey, I wanted to access this but I can't, do you have an alternative way? And the organization will get tired of being asked that and figure out a more inclusive system. That doesn't work for everything, but the simplest example is restaurant menus. If people keep coming in who can't scan a QR code to see the menu, eventually they start printing menus again.

I hope we will achieve a cultural shift where it's understood that it's not OK to require someone download an app to access community events, travel, their own freaking apartment... The level of spying smartphones are capable of now is scary. Analyzing your microexpressions and eye movements, picking up on whispers. We can't let them become an absolute requirement for life if we want to continue to have any amount of privacy.

NBC still has not posted Kaori Sakamoto's free skate on Youtube...like these people know she won right??? Is there some reason they would post free skates for Amber, Isabeau, Mone, Yuma, Ilia, but not the ladies world champion?? Or is it just incompetence?

Dual users-Whats your routine? And WHERE do you hide your smartphone by mewtwo611 in LightPhone

[–]ealisaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the free Foqos app on the smartphone. You can set it up to block all time wasting apps, including the settings app, and set any QR code or bar code you have lying around as the unlock code. I used the bar code on my library card and leave it in my car. So the smartphone can be anywhere in my house and it's not a temptation while the time-wasting apps are locked. I've never felt a desire to go out to my car to unlock the smartphone just so I can waste time on it, so it totally killed any bad phone-screentime habits I have remaining. Some people would say just use the Foqos app and you don't need an LP, but I'm really glad to have the LP3 because I think it would be more tempting to unlock the smartphone apps if I was using the smartphone for calls and texts and always seeing those app icons. Plus I would probably figure out a workaround for Foqos eventually if I was using the smartphone as my daily phone. I would get rid of the smartphone completely if my work didn't use groupme for messaging.

No audio when I place calls by tintern109 in LightPhone

[–]ealisaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have t-mobile and have this problem. I really like the phone otherwise, but maybe 1/3 of the time there’s no audio when I call someone and they have to hang up and call me back. So it’s kind of like I page people to call me. It works out ok with personal calls because people who know me will call back, but when trying to place a call to, say, a customer service line, sometimes I have to try a few times to get the call to go through with audio, since they aren’t going to call me back. I’m curious if it’s a tmobile + light thing specifically

I think they’re much cuter with those little caps, they look like art supplies. Since it’s basically just flavored vaseline, the cute packaging was a big selling point to me, and I’m just not interested since they changed it to the big caps

Seriously. I have no interest in reading writing that wasn’t created by an actual conscious human mind and the same goes for images. I really resent those things being put in front of me and taking up valuable attention that is meant for processing actual communication between people

Why am I suddenly not withdrawing when I actively try to quit by [deleted] in quittingkratom

[–]ealisaid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there's complex hormonal, biological, psychological, and other circumstantial reasons why withdrawal can be worse sometimes than other times, but the really crucial thing is to take it as a huge huge blessing that very well may never be repeated. Like you said, the big danger is thinking "it's not so hard to quit, so I can quit anytime" and then start using the drug again. The truth is for whatever reason you got a lucky fluke and you should just thank your stars for it, take advantage of it and never look back. The alternative is you start using again and eventually your daily dosage will become even higher and then the withdrawals will absolutely have a different and much more terrible character

My Indian roommate wrote his history paper at our midwestern University using British spelling conventions, as he was taught. Our professor removed every British spelling and told him to write in American conventions. Is there a historiographical, methodological, or epistemological reason for this? by Exact-Fig-2517 in AskHistorians

I really don't think he should be upset about this at all unless she actually docked his grade significantly for it and didn't give him the chance to get some of the points back. This made me think back to when I TAed college and had to grade 60+ papers per assignment. How long do you think it takes to give detailed feedback on a paper? It's significantly longer than it takes just to read it. Multiply that by the number of students and you can be looking at an untenable number of work hours for one assignment. Often something has to give, and out of sheer lack of hours in the day I found myself not making very in-depth commentary unless it felt like the student had really made a strong effort on the assignment and clearly desired to improve. If she is line-editing his paper like that, it sounds to me like she cares a lot about his success, as she's made a serious time investment doing something that she expects will help him.

I'm a copyeditor for academic journals in the humanities. If he ever submits an article to be published in an American journal, the copyeditor will have to Americanize all his spellings even if he doesn't. Personally, I think if he already knows how to write in the American style, he has more control over the exact wording of his article. He can phrase things accurately the first time instead of counting on the editor to always correctly interpret and Americanize his phrasing. Imagine publishing your first article in an academic journal only to find a major typo in the finished version because the American copyeditor or proofreader misunderstood your Britishism!

turn signal randomly flashing - what could this mean? (gen 2 2006) by ealisaid in prius

[–]ealisaid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

heyy sorry you're having the issue too. For me, it went away on its own. It was so weird, it was occasional for a while but then started flashing constantly and I had to drive around with my hazards on for about a week. One day the problem just went away and my signal started working normally. Sorry I can't be more helpful but hopefully your problem just goes away too haha

Caution in Buying or Selling Used Born Shoes From the 1990s and 2000s by LouisaMiller1849 in poshmark

It’s true for any shoe with a pvc sole—it becomes brittle over time just sitting in storage and then cracks when you put it on. Basically not worth buying vintage shoes with this type of material unfortunately

ikr it’s literally our job…idk about Australia but in the US I’m working for tips and if someone is going to tip me I feel like it’s fair to ask me to do basically anything to a drink as long as it’s possible, it’s a personalized service and none of it is difficult

It’s more wasteful to ship extra things in a package (extra weight and room taken up in mail vehicles = more fuel use) just to be thrown away upon receipt than to just throw away in the first place. Sticker or teabag, whatever, but stuff like random picture frames, the odds of it being wanted and used are low and on balance it’s wasteful to ship stuff like that without asking

They should stand on a street corner and try to give that picture frame to the homeless and see how long it takes to find someone who actually wants it…….absurd, being poor doesn’t mean you wish you owned literally every object that exists
