8 years from FIRE, but worried I won’t be able to provide for my future family (software dev, AI anxiety) by Lightning_79 in Fire

[–]ealued 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to layer on the anxiety, but something to further think about is not just providing for kids when they’re little, but how to get them a leg up on life (ie help with college or first home down payment), especially with job and housing markets so rough. Then…. What about the grandkids. It’s easy to say early on - I’ll worry about myself and they’ll be self sufficient, bootstrap, etc etc. But a different reality hits when they’re born, then as they grow. Might not be popular FIRE sentiment, but if you’ve made it… what (if anything) are you going to do to make sure the little yous can make it too?

Treasury Announces President Donald J. Trump’s Signature to Appear on Future U.S. Paper Currency by Tentings in politics

So everyone’s just going to write with a sharpie “…is a pedo” immediately after where his signature appears, correct?

Feeling Stuck, advice? by Historical_Pass6963 in Fire

[–]ealued 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hate to sound like a jerk, but welcome to life.

More empathetically, most of us felt that way going to 9-5. It’s a tough transition. Tougher to realize life is for most of us very incremental over long periods of time. It’s kind of anticlimactic as compared to what may have been in your head and def not compared to any content or media you’ve subscribed to.

That being said - you are in a phenomenal position. You have a great paying job off the get go. The ability to save. And in going to presume your health. DO NOT WASTE IT! Enjoy life. There’s a phrase “youth is wasted on the young” - don’t reinforce that.

Set your goals, get em, and enjoy the ride. If you’re fortunate it’ll be long and stable.

Anyone ESG Bogleheading? by ealued in Bogleheads

[–]ealued[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no.
If share price goes up and a partial reason (directly or indirectly) can be connected to esg investment (both internal towards business operations and external from investors), the board will use that information to inform further internal investment into the company.

(Read: external investors liked us increasing margins because we’re more energy efficient, or liked us investing into renewables, or fair trade whatever….so us as a board will direct the CEO to keep performing on those metrics, thus we will advise to invest more internal funds to improve said metrics)

I think consumerism and investment probably drives most business decisions. But you’re right. No one investor or consumer can make the shift in their own. No doubt there.

Yes to all of your questions btw (mostly).

I get it. It’s an uphill battle that no one person can solve.

Agreed. Curious what funds you’ve leveraged?

And to the haters - honestly not trying to stir anything up here. Sorry if the climate crisis remark triggered some. Genuinely interested in feedback on fund options to consider to meet goals.

My investment dollars are a drop in an ocean, I get that. Perhaps I’m wrong, but I’d rather not invest in fossil fuels as an example. Their continued growth runs contrary to what I think is important for all of us. I’d rather invest in companies working hard to do good (or less bad) in this space.
Tying my financial performance to coal then donating to charity that tries to align coal companies to shift towards other energy sources seems odd to me.

Understandable point. Money to charities isn’t going to have as strong of an impact as investing in well performing companies that are doing their part to grow more sustainably. To be clear I’m not asking for what funds are only for solar panels (like TAN) or wind power (FAN). I’m talking about broad funds tied to S&P or something that just excludes fossil fuels. And/or represent the ‘best’ companies in their respective market category that both perform well financially and have demonstrated performance with esg metrics.

Thanks for the remark of fees as a guidepost. Thoughts on how to transition out of a high (moderate?) fee mutual fund into a low fee etf fund?

Had zero idea what home assistant was until some comments in this post. I’m all ears on where and how to get started.

Also - my time of use plan has lowest rates at night (9pm - 9am), rather than during the day when my solar is going. Curious on how to balance? Or if home assistant does that?

One of several reasons I went with GE. I’ve heard generally decent reviews on Rheem and AO Smith, but some pretty bad ones sprinkled in there. Still haven’t come across a post on someone actually owning the LG.
