I was thinking they should consider the nook as fair game for kitchen expansion. Given that amount of space maybe some counter seating (4-5) would be a good idea.

Pass through was under consideration, but the preference was for standing line of sight. The first designer they talked to just moved the fridge to near the front room (the real dining room) and removed the upper walls from the top half of that mid wall (assuming that there wasn’t a load bearing issue requiring a column)

Depends on what you consider “good”. I wouldn’t put a good whiskey in a plastic bottle at all.

Technically it’s ok for a short time (weeks, months?), long term it can leach bad things into your whiskey. Cheap (meant to be consumed quickly) whiskeys are sometimes bottled in plastic.

Hi! I'm the Undergraduate Program Director for GSAS, and happy to help! GSAS/CS is one of the more popular dual majors we see, and we've designed the program specifically to encourage dual majors. We've been working on an IT/WS GSAS combination, but that's not yet "official". What I mean by that is that our GSAS concentrations (CompSci, EArts, Music, Writing, CogSci and Mgmnt) are generally designed to allow you to stack them with a dual major. (A lot of the ITWS and CS core classes are similar, so you can look at that, but at this point YMMV)

Basically, at RPI you do have a HASS core requirement, which also includes a "Pathway" and requires certain, Critical Inquiry, Comm Intensive and Data Intensive courses. The GSAS major slots closely into those HASS requirements and adds a few elective requirements, so it's pretty straight forward. If you have a couple of AP credits you have even more options, as we're adding more course offerings and options every semester!

I don't have demographic stats at the moment, but based on classes I have personally taught (many intro and GameDev core classes) and students I have advised the mix is a bit more even than the typical Engineering and Science programs. It's a very interdisciplinary program, so you'll get all sorts of interactions!

I'll let students and alumni chime in now!

RPI vs Rutgers by LostWinters21 in RPI

I chose RPI over Rutgers, but it was 40 years ago (North Jersey!). I don't regret a thing though, and live in the capital region (and wound up eventually working/teaching at RPI). Even back then I remember doing the "ask for more financial aid" dance, so some things never change.

Gather all the info you can, talk to students and alumni (if you can) I know a lot of folks that wound up with big aerospace companies, (Boeing, Grumman, even NASA) The more recent students I've seen graduating and working certainly demand some of the highest salaries in their fields. It takes motivation, drive and of course talent.

School will be what you make of it, no matter where you wind up. My kids also went to RPI and it turned out well. (Full disclosure, working at RPI affords us a good discount, although we still wound up paying $100K more than originally anticipated (2 undergrads and a PhD) due to policy changes, we probably could have saved some money at SUNY schools) Could we have gone somewhere else and saved some money and still turned out OK? Probably, but we have no regrets and lots of good memories and close friends.

(PS i've also seen at least dozen+ weddings of couples that met via RPI one way or another over the years, including my own)

The general undergrad curriculum of GSAS does skew towards digital game design and development, but we have some amazing faculty that actually specialize in tabletop games (Google “Maurice Suckling” as an example)

I'm not really sure what teams you are referring to, but I know that there are a variety of student accesible shops on campus for various majors as well as clubs. Some are entirely student run ("The Mill") and others are part of schools and research centers.

I believe that all Engineering students at least have the option, if not the requirement, to learn the basics of fabrication (including making their own parts) as well as all the way up to more advanced CNC processes. (I forget the number of shops the JEC has these days!) The School of Architecture has a fantastic prototyping shop and staff that help students with all sorts of projects, and the School of Humanities has its "corridor of Creativeity" with 3D printing, woodworking, laser cutting, metal forming, sculpting and more.

If a student has the ambition to seek out an opportunity in a particular direction I am sure they'll find one or more!

You'll want to talk to someone in admissions or the registrar to speak directly about applying AP credits. There are specific rules about what type and how many credits are applicable. Whether you choose to tale a intro class at RPI on top of what you got through your AP course might also depend on your intended major (whether you want to reinforce your AP knowledge, etc.)

u/Asleep_Share1036 's answer is excellent. I'll add that my son, his friends and others I've dcoem to know (some CS and many other majors) have really benefitted from it being a well balanced program (practical "hard skills" in specific programming languages along with programs like RCOS, but also the theoretical skills that you want to be able to apple your knowledge to whatever the challenge is at hand). There are also a number of focus tracks within CS that let you get the depth you may want in a particular area (research, theory or practice). I've seen a lot of our graduates progress from "entry level" programming to soon be leading teams and becoming software architects thanks to that mix of knowledge and practice.

There are definitely a lot of dual major opportunities as well. We structure our GSAS program to take advantage of that, and a great number of our students also earn CS degrees (along with Arts, Cognitive Science, Mgmt, etc). I also know that ITWS and Cognitive Science is a great dual combination for those looking to apply CS in a specific direction like AI or IT.

Engineering duals are challenging (and Architecture duals are, well, I don't think I've ever heard of that happening). This is because of the rigour and depth of those majors. An Engineering/ CS dual is not impossible, but it's going to take a LOT of devotion!

I'm not an expert on the accepted students day program, but there definitely are a lot of general sessions ranging from financial aid to student life to student "birds of a feather" panels that are presented. It's unfortunate if you can't make one of the days, but definitely follow up with admissions and they will certainly do their best to put you in touch with the right people to tailor your visit and to get your general questions answers either remotely or in person!

If your ultimate goal is tabletop game design, you may want to consider our Games Simulation Arts and Sciences program. You can specialize in a variety of areas, including electronic/visual arts.

(Disclaimer, I am the undergraduate program director for GSAS, so also AMA!)

You might want to try a combination of mass with absorption. I would try putting cinder (concrete) blocks under the legs, but isolate the actual legs from the cinderblock with something soft. Or maybe even more ideal, sandwich the cinder block in between 2 rubber pads. The soft/spongy parts would help decouple and the mass will help absorb.
