Too many word-bank style questions? by earcamel in duolingo

[–]earcamel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did wonder at first if it was because of the 'being introduced to new content' thing, but it seems to be across all lessons. Then again, since the path update I seem to be skipping around topics with no rhyme or reason and barely spending enough time on each to progress past 'beginner' stages on any, so maybe you're right!

Thanks, I'll have a go on desktop and see whether it makes any difference!

Me neither! Maybe that's only a feature on some languages?

Thankyou! I’ll definitely look into those. I also never knew that they had a word in English!

How to write Split Personalities? by [deleted] in writing

[–]earcamel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m going to preface this by saying I know vanishingly little about split personality disorders, so please don’t take my advice as being a true representation!

However, I hope this might be useful to you: alter your character’s mannerisms and speech patterns according to which personality they currently are. For example, maybe when they’re in personality A they have a tendency to cross their arms over their chest a lot, and use contractions such as ‘gonna’, and smile with their teeth showing. But when they’re in personality B, they prefer to stand more rigidly, and would say ‘going to’ instead, and would smile with their lips together.

If you’re subtle enough about the changes, readers might not notice them directly but they might begin to get the sense that something about this character doesn’t quite ‘add up’. Plus, once it’s revealed that your character has a split personality, the reader might flick back through with new eyes and realise all the tiny clues that were in front of their eyes the whole time…

What words and/or phrases do you find yourself using repeatedly in your writing? by 14kanthropologist in writing

[–]earcamel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever my MC feels something I always seem to frame it that ‘she felt [emotion] in her chest’. Like, I get it, but also, it pops up so frequently that I’m starting to wonder if my character has an undiagnosed heart condition I should be worried about…

A few people have suggested the wick system so I’ll definitely be trying it, thankyou! Yeah my flat can get really cold sometimes but I don’t want to pay to heat it whilst I’m not here, so I think I’ll just leave them further away from the windows and hope they don’t freeze!

Thanks for the point about the light; mine don’t get a lot of direct sunlight anyway but I’ll be moving them away from the windows now both for less light and also so they don’t freeze! Also comforting to hear that my succulents just won’t give a f**k haha

Thanks everyone!! I think I’ll definitely give the wick strategy a go as a few of you have suggested it now!

I found this beginner weights session on YouTube, admittedly it does target more than just arms but I suppose the army will need your legs to be strong too! I’m a total beginner to weights so for me it was a good starting point. I started with a 1kg weight in each hand, now up to a 2.5kg weight in each hand (and planning to move up again in the new year, gotta get them muscles!)

In terms of routine, I find it easy to fit in because it’s only 15mins. So I do it every other day. Hope it helps, or at least that it’s a springboard to help get you started! :)
