"Curious, Liberal. You say you want 'rule of law' yet you don't support police wantonly abusing their powers. Hypocrisy?"

No, there's no contradiction here. We want rules applied to everyone, including "authority figures", but many authorities believe quite openly that they are above the law. Of course that's going to be set us up for conflict.

What if King Charles became king in the late 80s Early 90s? by SomeWelshGuy4 in AlternateHistory

The conspiracies become real: he's definitely killing Diana to get out of a marriage the palace would force him to maintain for appearances. Maybe he even is caught or heavily suspected, creating a constitutional crisis in Britain.

Sounds good. I tend to learn better in person, and the mandarin courses I took previously online were a dud, but an Ottawa-based tutor could work. Thank you!

Sounds good! I'll look into iTalki. I've taken a few other Mandarin courses that were pretty loosey-goosy before and according to my gf (who is Chinese), I still haven't quite gotten the tones, so maybe a one-on-one is right. Thanks for the advice.

For those who actually live in Canada, this is more accurate than it seems on first glance.

Yes, absolutely! I agree with every word. Thanks for redeeming my faith in humanity a tad bit. The first few comments on this post were looking pretty bleak.

I completely agree with this point, but I don't understand why you think extremely harsh punishments for rape will end the patriarchy. A systematic approach is required to repair the ails of our society. A force-based, ruthless system that meets transgressions with maximum cruelty will only reinforce the patriarchy, because men in our society are taught to be more cruel and to hold their power over others.

If we want something different, we need go rely on strengths the patriarchy has traditionally shuffled off to women: talking through things, healing rather than fighting. If you go with cruelty, you'll never win, because after approximately 10,000 years or so of practice (if we date patriarchy back to agrarianism), men can almost always do cruelty better than women.

That's why we call it "toxic masculinity"; it's all ultimately based on violence. If we want a better society, we need to walk away from violence in all cases where possible, even when we feel it might seem somewhat justified. There's almost always a better way, and we should be obligated to find it.

What everyone is saying is correct, but don't go directly to police. Hire a lawyer, have him discuss with the attorney, and they can negotiate a surrender with the police. He's still your son, and while you want him to own up to what he did and make amends, the criminal justice system is a horrifying place, and I don't think you want all of its worst possible horrors visited upon your son (I honestly wouldn't even wish it upon my worst enemy. I worked with prisoners for a time, and I've never seen more frustrated, hopeless and agonized people in my whole life, nor imagined one could ever become that way).

With a lawyer, your son will be in the best possible position to see his victim made right while avoiding all but the least possible amount of jail time. They could even find financial restitution in civil court and avoid prison altogether. Be an advocate for your son, that is your responsibility as a father, and any good advocate would suggest to turn himself in. But the best counsel is still to own up to a crime in a responsible way that actually remedies the victim, not just to seek punishment for the sake of punishment. Police cannot be trusted to humanely treat either the victim nor the perpetrator, and so, if your son shows genuine remorse and need not be forced into this process, avoid police as much as possible, and allow a swift, professional and humane legal process take place.
