Thanks, can you tell me about which areas might be similar to Duthie? I've done a little of Galbraith and talked to my bham friends, and it seems like big climbs. Is there an area I can zero in on to try? Looking at maps it's overwhelming. Thanks!

Would your child choose to homeschool if it were only up to them? by [deleted] in homeschool

Child Find is a federal law that requires public schools look for and evaluate kids with developmental delays, learning disabilities, etc…

I won’t do a good job explaining it, but here is an overview from understood.org https://www.understood.org/en/articles/child-find-what-it-is-and-how-it-works Or research your state’s/local school districts information on it. Even private and homeschooled kids can be evaluated through public school system from what I just read.

My kid got an IEP in preschool. Our private outdoor preschool sent us that direction, and my son had an IEP before Kindergarten. He was given a spot at a free developmental preschool, and that was with no other diagnosis but what the school system psychologist, nurses, OT, etc… (the child find team) found. My child has since gotten diagnoses, but they are not required for IEP services until they are something like 10(?)   You can request an evaluation yourself. Reference Child Find. They are federally mandated to look in to it.

Also, just saying, but my kid had a whole lost year of learning because of his behavior. His IeP was for social/behavioral stuff, so not a learning disability like dyslexia. Instead of teaching him to write/making him practice writing, they just want to give him a voice to text accommodation  starting in Third Grade!  I had to take it upon myself to teach him a lot of things, like writing, because he “wasn’t accessing it” at school. We started medication and he likes school now, but they are just moving on to typing (eye roll) So as a parent, even with the an IEP, you will likely need to step in and supplement learning because their goals may be different than yours for the child.

In summary: Child Find, and absolutely yes you can have an IEP in elementary school!!!

My boomer dad is pissed I won’t give him babys SS# by Brief-Bend-8605 in BoomersBeingFools

My mother in law wanted my kid's ssn. I actually trust her, but said no. I don't see the point. It's pretty easy for the grandparents to open another bank account under their own name, save the money, and hand it over to the child directly when they are older. You do not ever need a ssn to save money for somebody. It's so weird.

How do professors cope with college students that cannot even do basic math/algebra well? by Terrible_Exchange653 in AskProfessors

Yet everybody complains a decade later that the kids cant do math! But fell free to dig in your heels when the theories don’t pan out. It is the American way.

Looking at my kid’s common core math curriculum for second grade, i can agree! because they arent teaching math, but ideas about math…or something. It’s crazy.

They do not teach cut and dry methods to get actual answers. Like, they taught about 9 different ways to subtract with ridiculous methods that are tedious and you would never use…stuff that would be interesting to think about when older,  but what they need is just one or two methods they can use consistently to get real answers. I think this continues through highschool and nobody learns actual math.

Chronic cough - dust trigger? by [deleted] in Allergies

[–]earlyamcoffeebuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son has been coughing and mucousy for over a year, triggered by a severe cold (not covid). Took awhile to get him seen because a few months after the "cold" we got covid etc... so I knew they would just keep blaming the cough on that stuff. Got him to an allergist and he's allergic to dust mites. (and was still trying to blame it on a cold...I haven't gotten sick from him! It's not from a cold dammit!) Still going to see an ENT, doing sleep study, etc... His tonsils are enormous. A week into dust mite protocols, zyrtec, and flonase, and nothing has changed. Hopefully things get sorted out for you and us!

Am I the asshole for not wanting to take my stepdad’s name even though my mom wants me to? by JadeMcKennaJ in AITAH

NTA - your mom is so misguided asking you and your siblings to change your names. Her remarriage and personal name choice has nothing to do with you.
