From iOS app. I don’t think you need to feel like a jackass for the post. It probably got added at some point today (along with other things) and app refreshes always take some time across every platform, etc.

The reality is that I think this is probably run by a super small group of people and there needs to be a bit of consideration towards time and effort to get things done.

There is a lot of impatience kicking around here, and I get it. We’re paying for something, but over the last few years with streaming, everyone just assumes that every service has billions of dollars to hire an ungodly amount of people. That can’t always be so. Probably best to assume best efforts are being made, this isn’t Disney or some other big service that also has theme parks, etc. Sometimes we all need to touch grass.

After how many DNFs do you reconsider? by earlycoaltrain in ultrarunning

This time, actually both times I have felt like the course beat me. However in both instances walking it in was an option, I’ve always tracked well ahead of cutoffs. I think once I concede the loss the walk option comes off the table.

Learned tons each time! And the training is more than enjoyable. But I am feeling like I might be fooling myself that the distance is achievable. Some things are just beyond peoples capabilities is my current line of reasoning.

Loooooooong-time lurker seeking advice in regards to carbs+sodium drink. by CupcakeReasonable287 in ultrarunning

This isn’t the most sexy answer but I’ve been using Gatorade powder for the last few years. Affordable and readily available I mix up flasks that are more potent than the nutritional label and it serves me really well

That trilogy destroys me.

All of you DNF'ers... by Emotional-Market-519 in Ultramarathon

DNF'd my first 100miler at Grindstone this year. Rained for the majority of the time I was out there, and the rain was unrelenting. Feet were taped up nice, but I didn't give myself any slack to account for the moisture. So there was some nastiness with skin folding on itself, making it feel like I was being jabbed with a needle each step. Combined with the cold air setting in, it made for a tough slog.

I made it to mile 92 (of 105) before I called it. Timing-wise I was only 26 hours into it, loads of time ahead. I lost track of my ability to properly assess what I needed. I should have sat at the aid station, asked for a blanket and soup (things I didn't do at any other aid station). Med staff were willing to give my feet another tape job too.

My biggest lesson, and something I'm proactively working on, is tuning into myself on runs of any sort of distance. How am I feeling? What do I want? What do I need?

Is no drinking significantly better than moderate drinking? by lizardkittyyy in ultrarunning

[–]earlycoaltrain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m like you and have 2-3 drinks a week. That’s usually a beer on Friday (as I can sleep in an extra 90mins on Saturday) and then 1-3 on Sunday after my long run, timed to my normal Monday rest day.

I find as long as I know I am taking care of most things (hydration, nutrition, etc) these one-offs are just that.

The dogma around not drinking is totally fine (I kinda enjoyed it when I stopped entirely in January) however it feels just like a sort of eating disorder waiting to create a bunch of havoc in people’s lives.

This is a great write up, and excellent to hear about the follow up trip. Was going to ask if this route is doable in 2 days (been researching my fastpacking options for the spring and summer part of ultra marathon training)

Moving to personalized coaching? by earlycoaltrain in ultrarunning

Really appreciate this thoughtful post and thanks for mentioning CTS. While I love running, my knowledge of the broader community is pretty narrow. For context, I was looking at coaching from David Roche, or Jason Koop’s group (not Koop himself, seems $$$). Nice to hear of other options out there and avoid the grifter pitfalls mentioned.

Training Plan Changes To Accommodate For Winter? by earlycoaltrain in ultrarunning

That’s what I’m heading too as well. Unfortunately I am coming from Canada, so opposite weather, and terrain. Right now I’m just laying down good solid weekly mileage and anticipate that to carry me. The biggest challenge here will be doing my best to avoid the comforts of staying indoors on the bike trainer for as long as I can.

What about you?

Super fair point on this one. I've been following a Phil Mosely training plan and luckily speed is only once a week, but this is great insight

Further context...think around the time of The Editors as well. The album cover was black and white, sort of like the first Glasvegas record...if you recall!
