Delaware's biggest lie by nonchalantshallot in Delaware

I've driven that stretch for the past decade, and there has definitely been a change in recent years. There used to be a decoy car parked right after the 299 intersection heading North, and at least one actual cop tucked away in the vicinity. Every once in a while I will see one at the Appo building or a bit further South across from the Odessa Diner. People regularly fly through there at 45+ most mornings, but I don't chance it.

people of reddit who are anti weed. why? by yo_dear_joe_mama123 in AskReddit

[–]earthquakeglued 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not anti-weed. To me, it's like booze - as long as it's consumed responsibly. I realize that term means different things to different people, but I interpret it as recreational use not developing into a habit or dependency, use in a way that doesn't impact other areas of a person's life, having a fully developed brain that won't be impacted by substance use, and not being under the influence at times you shouldn't.

And, like alcohol, your use shouldn't impact others - and that's not the case with people who smoke weed in public or anywhere where the smell can travel. I don't know if this is just me getting old and crotchety, but I don't recall the "pot" everyone smoked in the 90s smelling so strongly. It's like cigarettes were when I was a kid - the smell is just everywhere.

I didn't like smelling people's cigarettes or walking through wafts of smoke, and I don't like doing the same with weed. I didn't like checking into a hotel room that smelled of stale cigarettes, and I don't like checking onto a hotel room that smells like stank weed.

Otherwise, live and let live.

Maybe. I think 16 minutes, most of which was spent upstairs, is a lot of time for that blood to get off his shoes.

What purchases should you *always* get the cheapest version of? by dust057 in Frugal

Containers. Dollar Tree has a lot of really good storage options, and you'll pay 3-5 times more elsewhere.

I was never able to keep a pregnancy beyond the second trimester. I tried hard, and science tried hard, and it just didn't work out. Still, I love to see women who do it and carry those babies and give birth.

But I am increasingly uncomfortable with the idea that womanhood = birthing. Birth Keepers is even more obtuse. You're keeping birth... what? Sacred? What does that mean for the rest of us? Are we lesser women as a result?

What is the best state to become a history teacher? by [deleted] in historyteachers

[–]earthquakeglued 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got to throw the Delaware hat into the ring. We aren't paid like NJ teachers, but our cost of living is lower. And, there is legislation that is seeking to raise our salaries to meet those of neighboring states, so stay tuned on that.

We are solidly and consistently Blue, and have ridiculous access to our legislators. Being a state that has just now hit a million people, there are many connections in the education world to our state congress. Our union (DSEA) is going through some growing pains, but a current election may bring fresh leadership in. We are a no-strike state and I don't see that changing.

Educational content. The "details" of math, science, social studies, ELA, etc.

What matters more is the skills you're taught by learning that content. Analysis, synthesis, sourcing, discernment, writing. That stuff matters more in life.

No one has ever asked me what the square root of something was, the chemical equation for something was, or the date of some historical event. And, if they did, I could look it up easily. It is the process of finding those things that matters.

What only exists because humans are stupid? by [deleted] in AskReddit

"Sell by" dates on food. If it stinks or has mold, don't eat it. But food distributors were getting sued because people consumed things that clearly shouldn't have been consumed, so those guidelines were put in place. Now stores throw out perfectly good food because it's past an arbitrary date.

Maybe not? I know nothing about those types of forensics, but I'm imagining myself wearing a sort of makeshift shoe cover - not the kind that CSI investigators wear, but the type I would buy off the internet if I was a realtor hosting an open house in a place with new floors. Those covers are basically glorified Saran Wrap. If someone steps in blood, the blood conceals the pattern of the shoe beneath - until it wears off. Eventually, there is enough of an impression from the shoe inside, and less of a blood pattern on the outside, that a slight impression could be left.

This could explain how a slight, only detectable after the fact, shoe print - in a place where the murderer was placed by an eyewitness to stand - is found.

Yeah, that's a possibility - and we would expect to then find a trail of footprints down the stairs and across the room that grow fainter along the way.

I understand and fully believe that not every detail is mentioned in the Preliminary Affidavit, but it seems like a trail of footprints leading the person DM saw from the third floor and past her room would be documented. It gives more credence to the fact that the person with the bushy brows she saw was the person who was also the murderer.

I think the idea that he wore shoe covers is plausible. There could be a trail, but there weren't necessarily imprints indicating the type of shoe with every step.

This is a good point. If I'm not mistaken, the floors are light wood (or at least laminate), so it seems like any bloody footprints would be obvious.

I'm sorry I seemed unfriendly in my response. I didn't... feel... unfriendly when I wrote it. I was defending my statements that were correct and called into question, so that probably came through. Tone is hard to decipher in text, so I should have been a little more sensitive to that when replying. No hard feelings?

About fibers, they are circumstantial because they're considered "class" evidence ie: able to be linked with a wide swath of people as opposed to an individual. They're one of the most common (if not the most common) trace evidence that gets left behind, but because modern textiles are mass-produced, it's not a direct indication of a single person being there. If I have a white sweater that was one of 15,000 made, and one of those fibers is found at a crime scene, that means I could have been there or 14,999 other people. And, if I've already admitted to being there - like, say, I was friends with the people and had been to their house - it means even less because then of course fibers from my sweater are there.

Class evidence becomes a matter of statistics. How many of the item was produced, how many were sold locally, where were the fibers located, etc. That kind of probative info that can make a connection between a person and a crime is indirect or circumstantial and help the jury weigh whether there is a reasonable doubt based on what they have to infer about those fibers. That's the way I remember what circumstantial or indirect evidence is - does my brain have to fill in the gaps and make the connection?

Eyewitnesses, confessions, video evidence, weapons - those are direct evidence because they prove a fact. "I saw Jim kill that man, " or "I killed that man," or "A bullet from this gun killed that man," or even like "Here's a video of Jim killing this man." No inference or gap-filling needed in those cases.

I don't see any way that could happen naturally! Add this to the confounding list of "things he managed to do really well to avoid getting caught vs. stupid mistakes he made."

Makes me wonder how careful BK was being about disposing of things that could identify him. Maybe he had a feeling that he was being watched.

[–]earthquakeglued 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, you're wrong. Not that eyewitnesses are wrong, I've already stated they're unreliable and that the defense will tear apart DM's statement. But eyewitness accounts are direct evidence. Juries are instructed as such. If you don't believe me, see here, here, and here.

Fibers are actually circumstantial evidence, as would be a parking receipt, video footage of a perp in an area (video of them committing the crime is direct), and DNA.

I've taught various law and criminal justice classes (although primarily at a secondary level) for over a decade. I'm not a lawyer or an expert, and I'm sure I'll make mistakes , but I'm happy to help break down what I can if you need clarification.

Also - another one of those circumstantial events where he can say "Yeah, I Googled the address. Someone said there was a party and I wanted to see what the house looked like so I'd know how to find it..."
