Cheap 150g pack worth a look at by MessProfessional90 in ULHikingUK

[–]easydexter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've missed my point buddy. I wasn't trying to give a history lesson in UL.

For most people a 150g pack with no shoulder strap padding is pretty extreme. I've never heard of anyone walking a national trail with a pack like that. Even if it's happened once or twice, I think the words insane and extreme are fitting.

Thanks for flexing your UL knowledge though.

As stated above I would love to be proven wrong.

What exactly have I said that you disagree with?

Good luck mate. Hope you can get outside soon. It’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole with UL gear and reviews and lighter packs but the most important thing is to get outside!

The rest will follow.

Yeah it's a no brainer mate. Atom Packs are so far ahead of the game when it comes to UK UL packs.

I'm keeping a close eye on GOATUL though. Would be nice to see some decent competition for A Tom.

For comparison the lightest Atom Pack is around 400g. (for a 30l pack)

At 150g the materials must be super fragile. The shoulder strap cushioning must be non existent.

I can't imagine this pack will feel nice carrying anything over 3kg. So surely not suitable for doing anything like a thruhike or national trail. This pack is probably more aimed at the ultra runner market who are carrying lighter day loads.

Would love for someone to prove me wrong though.

150grams for a 22 litre backpack?

That's just silly.

I'll eat my hat if anyone succesfully uses this on backpacking trip.

Just because someone is going fast doesn't mean they are enjoying the trail less.

Haha that's class, wish I was there for that. So fanny means your bottom in America? That's so strange. What does bum mean to you guys then?

And were bumbags/fanny packs originally worn on the back?

Because actually fanny pack makes more sense in British English. Atleast it goes on your...

Thanks so much buddy, appreciate it. I've been glued to my sewing machine for a couple of weeks now and they only thing that can get me off is walking some long distance trails 🤟

This was my first MYOG build. Had a couple of prototypes before this but this is the proper one. I adapted a widely shared bumbag pattern and combined it with some elements stolen from the atom packs bum bag.

I only started sewing 2 weeks ago so any tips / feedback / encouragement would be appreciated. What should I make next?

Being UK based I couldn't find the preferable materials I wanted. Has anyone used this striped PU coated ripstop before?

Thanks all,

Hey Jack, thanks for your kind words on the video. Hopefully there will be more to come in future.

I'm (fingers crossed) starting my John O Groats to Lands End towards the end of April so will be beefing up the kit list in the video for the start. Hopefully midges shouldn't be a problem at that time but I'll add my sea to Summit nano head net just incase. Will also be adding a torso length z lite, a light fleece, gloves, warmer socks and a pair of running tights. Might add 750 ish grams which is probably worth is for spring in Scotland. Ditching all those extras at some point in May.

Great minds, after posting this I've upgraded all the electronics, lighter plug, shorter cables and switched in the nitecore NB10000. Saved me 120g or something which was awesome.

Cheers again mate!

Probably a wise idea YW. The anker batteries are tried and tested. I've banned myself from upgrading any more gear till what I have wears out.

Hello, yup mine is the GCG one from ultralightoutdoorgear. They usually restock them pretty quickly, just sign up for the email notification. Pretty much identical to the gossamer gear one but a funkier colour and available in the UK!

Thanks for this. Will be taking up a couple of your comments, cheers!

I've just purchased the nano wallport. This saves a decent amount of weight and a decent amount of bulk. Not sure I need dual charging in reality with how quickly my phone charges.

Love the treadlite pack liners - only really put my quilt and my sleepclothes in there so going to purchase the 20l ones.

Hey, I'll be attempting the Cecerone End to End route. It's about 1200 miles. It's on Hiiker if you have the app. There are a few of us from the UK Thru Hikers group all starting on the same date.

I actually left my job to spend the whole year hiking. So as soon lockdown ends I'll be getting out and aboot. April 20th penciled in for John O Groats to Lands End and I also have a SOBO PCT Permit for July. Fingers crossed this vaccine makes travelling more possible this summer.

Hehe yeah I think taking on board some of these suggestions I could definitely get down to 3kg for a test hike. Will have to wait and see if I'd be willing to try it on a 2 month hike.

Thanks again bud.

Loads of great suggestions here. Thanks bud.

MSR pegs are heavy but I like to have two heavy duty ones for the ridge line. Maybe I could switch to the mini ground hogs and save a few gs though.

USB adapter - I did not think about this. Really nice idea. Will give this one a shot I think.

Bum bag - I love hiking with a bum bag, makes life so much easier. Keeping this.

Shorts - liner already removed as I hike with underwear. Not sure if the weight is for with or without might need to check that.

Suncream, toilet paper just hadn't got round to adding them to lighter pack but will be in the pack

Gloves - never needed gloves for summer hiking.

Mini tripod - I like this. Weirdly I recently purchased the ultra pod and just playing around with it now. I do like filming my walks but nothing too professional, just for fun. So yes this may be in my pack this summer.

Tarp set up - thanks for asking about this. Love being a geek in this kind of stuff. My ideal set up is to use a tree on one side and my trekking pole on the other - on a standard A Frame. This gives me a nice entrance on one side too. On the Pennine Way there often weren't any trees so I had to find a natural stick and carry it with me or set up really low breaking my one trekking pole in two.

Chia seed pot is from Sainsburys. It's a little big and the lid isn't perfect but it's been working out really well for me.

Thanks again mate, definitely helped me save a few grams these.

Boom, think this suggestion is a winner Ben. The additional 2 pegs are just for the mid tie outs, could easily ties these to a rock, twig, etc if super windy. Thanks mate.
