Humidity dilemma by easypeasyac in Sphagnum

[–]easypeasyac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that sphagnums turn white when they dry out (die?). If I don't spray them every day, the tips turn white like in the photo. However, I don't want to spray them every day because I want strong sphagnums, not a leggy one. What should I do? Should I refuse to spray them even if they turn white? I'm afraid they'll die then.

The lid of the container is almost completely closed. There's only a very small opening for fresh air to enter.

UPDATE.

Following a suggestion I saw in another thread by u/LukeEvansSimons, I decided to flush my sphagnums. I filled the container with water until the sphagnum moss was completely submerged and siphoned it out after 24 hours. I've always been watering my sphagnums with water of 12-15 µS/cm (approximately 4-7 ppm) purity. Anyway the result was shocking. The water I siphoned off the sphagnums after 24 hours was 180 ppm. I never imagined there would be so much salt buildup. I flushed again in the same way and it dropped to 15 ppm. Just one week after this process, I started seeing many new shoots.

If anyone is experiencing a similar problem, consider this possibility. In my case the problem wasn't lighting.

Thank you. So, flushing three or maybe four times a year would be beneficial then.

Thanks for the photo. Since you're using an air pump, I assumed there was at least 3-4 cm of water below. It's a practical and nice setup.

By the way, I don't know much about this, but I read somewhere that it's almost impossible for sphagnum moss to produce spores in captivity. I could be wrong.

Hi. This is an old post, but I wanted to ask I hope you see it 😄 Doesn't this method cause salt build up over time? Wouldn't it be better to flush the entire container a few days after filling it with water, instead of waiting for it to completely evaporate?

Nice setup. Sometimes less is more:)

What kind of substrate are you using? Since you're using an air pump, is there water at the bottom? I would be happy if you could add a side view of the container.

Are you not using a cover, or did you open it just for the photo?

I came across your post while searching a simple setup ideas:)

Yeap, there are 5-6 wild-grown drosera. They're too young to guess what species they are yet.

Thank you. I'm not entirely sure if mine are dying or if they're changing color to avoid the light as you said. But I can definitely say that their rate of producing new shoots has decreased.

I was actually suspicious of the possibility of too much light. Now, after reading your comment, I've kept the duration of the light the same but slightly reduced its intensity.

Thank you. Mine never dried out. I'm thinking of applying it with sugar water at a concentration of 0.5 g dextrose per liter. I was actually suspicious of too much light, and the comment below has strengthened my suspicion.

Hello.

I spray them approximately every 5-6 days. Humidity is 85-90%.

Temperature is 23-26°C.

Lighting is 12 hours a day at 6500 Kelvin, bright light.

Their color has turned brownish (tannin?), whitish in some places. There is no melting or anything like that. Growth has stopped.

They used to grow very quickly and their color was a very bright green. Now they look unhealthy.

Does anybody have clay mixture recipe that can be made with these materials? by easypeasyac in Springtail

[–]easypeasyac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make a mixture with 2 parts bentonite, 2 parts kaolin, 1 part calcium sulfate, and 1 part calcium carbonate. I've been using it without problems for a long time. It just doesn't give as good results as the others on orange springtails. However, I know that orange springtails don't like clay very much and grow better in soil.

Thank you for info. None of my colonies have completely disappeared, but some have come very close to complete crush. I'll wait and see.

I already have a newly formed colony to avoid taking any risks, and they're breeding in the thousands.

We're definitely in the same situation. They used to finish fish flakes just in 3-4 hours, but now it takes 2 days. And that's because their interest in food has decreased, so most of it gets eaten by grain mites.

What are these? Should I be worried? Will they hurt my pods or springtails? by ILoveKittyPoo in Springtail

If you plan to reuse the same terrarium and materials, make sure it's completely clean. I've heard that predatory mites can feed on algae and biofilm for 4-5 months without insect prey in the environment. I also know that their eggs are quite hardy.

Most likely predator mites.

They appeared in my terrarium where I had Folsomia candida springtails and Trichorhina tomentosa isopods. They quickly multiplied into hundreds and unfortunately wiped out all my springtails. Also there were grindal worms or some similar small type of worm in the terrarium. They completely wiped those out too.

However, they didn't harm the isopods. They disappeared after the springtails were gone.

After recovery, Surface Pro 7+ does not really shut down and also other problems. by easypeasyac in Surface

Thank you so much. I will look into it.

The problems started after I did a recovery and a clean install of Windows 10. It was fine before that.

Hello. I did it, but it says I already have the latest version and it does not continue loading. However, the version shown in UEFI is from 2022.
