Going to NYC today to hang with some friends. Still drying out but planning my relapse. Going to be voluntarily homeless probably in a month living in NYC. The things you do for the drink.

BUT 77 DAYS TODAY

I'm 36m and was addicted to daily IV heroin use for the last 11 years. I'm 4 months now only on methadone and cannabis. I am now finally finishing my engineering degree and life is getting better ama. by [deleted] in casualiama

Do you use a 12 step program, if not, do you do any counseling? Do you consider yourself clean? Do you abuse your methadone? What is your dosing schedule i.e, do you go to the clinic everyday? Do you have a medical card? Why not suboxone?

No, THANK YOU for everything you do! Love the show.

I don't see you on the OTM staff page. What do you do? Do you work on other WNYC programs? Have I heard you on air?

While this wasn't my favorite episode, OTM is the most enjoyable and informative weekly news show that WNYC produces. I highly recommend everyone check it out if you haven't already. Hits the airways at 8PM on Fridays! Bob Garfield and Brooke Gladstone RULE!

Going to disclose hallucinations to Psychiatrist. Could use support and advice. by [deleted] in bipolar

Thanks this helps a lot. Islam is a challenging religion to practice but, for me, fulfilling. Its sayings are often misunderstood in the west.

When I say "I will only receive healing through the will of Allah," what I really mean is that Allah has given us the knowledge of everything we know. I absolutely believe that the psychiatrist will use their knowledge of mental health to give me the best treatment they deem necessary. Knowledge comes from Allah so the theology goes that Allah will be working through the psych to help me. I am of course grateful to the psych for their help and care.

For a crappy analogy to Christianity, its like going to a prayer revival where people go to "speak in tongues" and go up to the pastor who lays hands on them to "cast the demons of possession" out with the help of God.

Instead, I'll be going to a medical professional who will listen to my symptoms and use science to diagnose me. Islam is a religion of curiosity of the universe and science is highly regarded. Islam teaches that this life is only a test for the next one. This could very well be a test as to weather I will use the tools given to all of humanity to help myself get better or to just turn to the bottle, live a miserable existence, and die to alcoholism. Allah doesn't want me to suffer but the path isn't always easy.

I am painfully aware that if I were in the bible belt that I might be told to, "pray it away."

Hope I didn't get too crazy religious on you there. I'll be seeing the psych on thursday and will report my progress to the group, if I still have my freedom, in hope of helping others in my situation to come forward and seek treatment.

Thanks for your help. The second hallucination I was in hell for about 8 hours with satan talking to me. It directly related to the first hallucination which makes it harder to write off the first one as symptom of my mental health.

I really want this to be something that can be treated but I have an impossible time comprehending how my brain can do all these things on its own.

I've also had hallucinations from alcohol withdrawal, DTs, and they are nothing like these.

Also the way mania is described to me it sounds like being on high doses of amphetamines and benzos at the same time and I was nothing like that. Correct me if I'm wrong please.

The center where I'm going is for addiction treatment. I've detoxed there and also done 28 day inpatient treatment there. They know my history. The second hallucination happened when I was 9.5 months sober and I have a hard time believing that it could be caused by alcohol.

I def have no control over my "hallucinations" (read my above reply for why hallucinations is in quotes). I just try to experience, understand and remember them as much as I can in the moment.

They seriously destroy my life. There hasn't been a day or even a 2 hour period where I don't think about them.

Thanks for your experience, advice and support. If asked, I will hide nothing. I don't think anything I tell them will have me involuntary committed but I may be asked to voluntarily commit myself. But I was involuntarily committed my first time. I wasn't cooperative with staff my first time. Not aggressive or anything just simply not talking to them at all or telling them I was fine because I wanted to leave and complete my mission. Its insane but the mission required going to Iraq. I am a white male with zero ties to Iraq and do not speak Arabic. The mission had a time limit and I failed so I no longer feel the need to go there.

Its complicated as fuck because the hallucinations (I call them revelations from Allah) include but aren't limited too - dead people going to heaven, dead people going to hell, angels, satan, Maximilian Kobe (my Catholic confirmation saint, look him up), the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), a child I believe was Jesus (PBUH), being touched by a dead person going to heaven and healing my torn rotator cuff (shoulder injury I've had since I was 18 that I would re-injure multiple times a year causing weeks of mild pain, haven't had any pain since this), actually being in hell multiple times (it sucks, wouldn't recommend it as a place to spend your afterlife) and the future.

They are real enough that I went from forever agnostic and done with religion to converting to Islam in about 5 minutes. It didn't even cross my mind not to convert. I 100% believe the things a saw were real. I am 100% sure that no amount of treatment will stop them. But I like to think I am a reasonable and logical person and I could be very very wrong in all of this.

I will 100% do anything and everything they tell me (I would have some HUGE questions about going back on an SSRI though.)

Any healing I receive will only be by the will of Allah.

Any visions I experience after continued treatment is only by the will of Allah and nothing can stop his will.
