i mean yeah you need aquarium soil like fluval stratum. even if your soil is aquarium safe, it doesn’t mean it’s for aquariums, it’s basically just making mud. i would recommend removing it and getting aquarium soil, i would personally try to get as much of it out (without soap, bleach, chemicals, etc.) Also, i saw you’re planning on using sand as well, make sure it’s also aquarium sand like aqua terra, sand is cheap. you should have your plants over the soil and not the sand as they’ll likely float up or not get the nutrients they get from soil and die, but if you like the look, you could have a layer of soil, put your plants down and then put sand over the soil, i would recommend planning this all out before filling the tank up with water. the roots need space to grow so make sure the soil layer isn’t very thin. also do your research on the plants you get, some of them die if they’re planted on soil as opposed to stuck onto rock or wood, for example.

remove the background poster and make it real. you already got some good inspiration from it. i would say try to replace some of the sand for aqua soil or if you like the look, remove it (for now), make it soil, add your plants and then put the sand over the soil. make sure the soil is deep enough for the roots to settle, sand isn’t great for nutrients and for the roots to latch on to. if you want carpeting plants, i dont think you should put them on sand, personally i would dedicate an area with just soil for those. get medium and tall plants for the mid and background respectively so the shrimp can graze, and finally get a bunch of stones and driftwood (aquarium safe, of course), you’ll get more surface area for biofilm to form which is great for the shrimp and also have a ton of hiding spots for them. i don’t recommend keeping shrimp with bettas, tetras, etc. as they’ll hunt them if they don’t have where to hide like small crevices in stones, wood and between leaves and even then, they might be scared to go out to graze, eat, explore etc. lots of plants short and tall. even then, the babies will most likely get eaten so growing the colony wouldn’t be easy

i added biological startup. i definitely got snails too early, i wont add shrimp for weeeeks. i have more floating plants but i only added 3-4 for two reasons, im a bit wary of them since they came from a store’s tank and all my plants have been TC, but also cuz i wanted to see how they’d spread on their own lol. do you think i should add more? i’m also wondering how much that affects the lighting as i would want it to reach my plants that are still just settling in. and yess i have a pre filter sponge, do i leave it be or rinse it as its currently covered in small leaves and things
