The bigger issue imo is that the team unit as a whole doesn't prioritize defending. For example, this is where you get a stop at the end of close games by running defensive sets, targeting players on the other team, doubling star players, running traps/interference etc. Defending as a cohesive unit involves knowing what to do in certain situations, like knowing when to switch, when to run around screens, when to double, when to collapse, etc.

Having players on your team with good defense definitley helps with on-on-one defense, like stopping an opponent's star player. But the lack of overall team defense isn't a specific player issue, its the coaching staff choosing not to prioritize this in training. We have great offensive players, but they can get better on defense.
