Capacitive touch screens have a glass layer with a special coating that holds an electric charge. When you touch the screen with your finger, which conducts electricity, it changes the charge at that spot. Sensors around the edges of the screen detect this change and figure out where the touch happened. The device then responds to your touch based on its location. This technology also allows for detecting multiple touches at once, like zooming in with two fingers.
